Finally got a few little ditties recorded on the new uke, so you can get an idea of how it sounds. Note that it has a low G, which I like for my somewhat non-uke-ish playing style. It could be strung up with a high G, which would make it sound a bit more like a traditional uke, although it is a different beast, by design. Anyway, thanks for listening!

I've got one more I don't have time to upload right now -- will do later.

Great sound from that brave new uke bliss

Great sound. nice playing too. It sounds a bit banjo-y but quite mellow too, like a regular uke

Thanks, guys!

Here's the other one:

http://soundcloud.com/todd-rose/la-vals ... es-petites

On this one, I start out by just playing the open strings slowly, then I go into this little tune.

I think the uke sounds a bit brighter in real life than it does in these recordings, but it is a deeper, warmer sound than a typical conventional uke.

A friend that I emailed these soundcloud links to said she couldn't access the recordings. Is anyone here having that problem? I assumed that anyone could go to the soundcloud site and listen to recordings there. Please let me know if you've had a problem. Thanks -

Very lovely sounds!
Quite unique as well.
I like the banjo-like brightness.
You have invented a great new sound.
Dan

Thanks, Dan! Yeah, you know that sound you get from a nice open-back banjo that is at once sweet, warm, and bright? That sound is one of the inspirations for this instrument.

After all the disparaging banjo jokes are said and done, I am a huge, unabashed banjo fan. Let 'em all say what they want... the banjo is one of THE great musical instruments of the world. I love all those African skin-head instruments from which the banjo evolved, too. Awesome sounds. Seen the film "Throw Down Your Heart" documenting Bela Fleck's travels and music making in Africa? Absolutely fantastic.

Anyway, thanks again, Dan. Your comments are much appreciated.

I too thought it sounded a little bit like a cross between a banjo and a uke, a pretty cool sound Todd.

It does seem to have a rather unique sound. I like it a lot. I think it works very well for your melodic playing style. I was expecting to hear strumming, and was quite pleasantly surprised by your clips.
Very nice, Todd.

Thanks, Frank and Patrick. The melodic stuff I like to play is part of why I have a low G on this one. It's got a great strum sound, too, IMHO -- I should make some strummier recordings. It can get very loud and have a heck of a wump to it with that low G string; it would be more light and ukey sounding in strum mode if it were strung with a high G, for a player who wanted that sound -- though it would still have a warmer/more full/less plinky sound than a conventional uke.

...I don't mean to say better, just different.

I just made a recording of a new original song, "You Are the Stayers". It's just a rough demo made in my office with my Zoom H2 sitting on my desk (like all these other sound clips), but I think it came out okay, and gives you another taste of the new uke in a little bit of a different musical context. I hope you enjoy it.

Nice songs and playing Todd. How is it to play this compared to a standard uke? Looks comfortable, even open back tuners feel heavy on a standard uke. How do you think the instrument would work as a guitar, or larger size instrument?
Thanks for sharing, great job on the uke, love the bridge.
Rob
