Hi Andy,

I've been indecisive about this but I finally decided I'd like a set. Am I too late?

How are the cauls coming along? Steve Smith and I are in the April 30 fretting class and it would be really nice to get to use them.

Everything is going according to plan right now. I have all the materials in hand for all of the sets and am just finishing the CAD and CAM work for the cauls themselves and the fixtures for machining the cauls in large batches. Assuming there are no major problems, I anticipate making first cuts on cauls themselves before the weekend.

I'm out of town over the weekend but anticipate having at minimum 9 sets available for the Fretting Session on the 30th (9 because each 24" length of brass produces 9 cauls) All the rest of the sets will be done shortly after if they're not already done by them. I'll run the sets over to Dave and Hesh's shop myself on the 30th.

Final price is looking at around $185

I just found this thread. Bummer I didn't get in on it. Will the set be available again latter? Thanks.

I'll have 9 sets ready by Friday and will be running sets to Ann Arbor guitars for the fretting class. I know you guys have sent emails but to same me from looking through the emails, please let me know on this thread if you'd like me to deliver them to AA guitars for you this weekend.

I'll still send the balance invoice via PayPal to make things easier. You'll see a small shipping charge just to cover gas money.

The rest of the sets will be ready to go sometime next week. I'll send invoices toward the beginning of the week to all the US customers as I'll be shipping flat rate (probably padded envelopes) and the Int'l customers next as I'll charge actual shipping

They're looking good so far, I really hope you guys like em!!

I'm making a few sets extra in this batch due to how things work out with materials. I'll make them available once I've settled up with everyone who's already ordered.

Andy, great to get a chance to meet you yesterday! Also, used the cauls today on a refret. The steps between the radius sizes are just right (thanks to Dave Collins too)!!

Hi all,

Just wanted to give an update - Dave and Hesh's students as you probably ready took the new cauls for a spin and everything looks good. I started on the rest of the batch today and everything looks on target to get everything finished by the weekend and ready to ship out on Monday. So, here's the final details.

1) Final price of this batch is $185 per set. Going forward, I'll have these on my website for $225.

2) Almost everyone paid a deposit so sometime today or tomorrow you'll receive an additional invoice for $135 for the balance plus shipping....which is as follows:

Domestic Shipments - USPS Small Flat Rate box - $7
International Shipments - USPS International Small Flat Rate - $25

A few of you have made other arrangements for shipping and that will be handled on a case by case basis. If something looks funny on the invoice shipping wise, please let me know and we'll fix it.

3) Individual orders will ship once it's paid in full.

4) This has been a very fun project - I think you'll love your sets!

P.S. I'm making a number of additional sets that I'll make available for $185 for a week or two after we're all settled up here to members of this forum.

Hi all,

The first shipment of UFCSs went out with today's mail and you should have received a shipping notification from USPS regarding your shipment. I simply didn't have time to make the labels for the internationals but will do so right after I hit send on this e-mail. Those will go out tomorrow.

Francois, I've sent you a PM with information.

Oh, one final note - please excuse the packaging of the actual fret cauls. They're bubble wrapped and there's plenty of packing in the boxes but I was at kind of a loss as to how to keep them from cutting out of the packaging with sharp corners so there's a bit of masking tape involved. I used blue tape but I would recommend getting them out of there as fast as you can to prevent the glue from sticking.

Also a note on burrs - I did the best to de-burr the fret seating portion as best I could but I made a lot of these and changed de-burring edge types a few times in the process until I found the best ones. Please double check for burrs where the frets actually touch the caul.

There are definitely some small burrs on the sides of the cauls - Dave chose to leave them on as they kind of hold the caul in place while you tighten the set screw but just keep in mind that it's there.

Important note to international customers - shipping cost is dependent on the country being shipped to!

I mistakenly thought that USPS "Flat Rate international" meant "Flat Rate International" but apparently it does not. What it does mean is flat rate by country. E.g. shipments to Canada are $24.95 while shipments to Australia are $34.95. Please check with the USPS site to check for shipping price to your country!

Sorry for the confusion.
