Unless it comes with a 4 bedroom house, I’ll have pass on that one.

Hey that's what I'm asking for my first build. Prices go up from there so get in line.

Does that include shipping?

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

My question: what happens to the vintage market after all baby boomers are essentially gone? Will there be a huge sell off by estates, flooding market... and will next generations pay crazy money for vintage?

Just curious.

My take

We will see certain things go up in value that previously had very little value. Mid 70s Gibson and Martin pieces for example. They're still awful guitars, but some folks are really enamored by the idea of "vintage" that they pay a little more but not quite what a much better item costs.

The only instruments I've seen really stay the same over the past 10 years are the 1930-1946 instruments from the likes of Gibson and Martin. That could change too with the change in demand.

What I'm not looking forward to is the continued plethora of people that bought a 1970s Gibson pos. Bring it into my shop and want it repaired because it "sounds dead"

:D Great posts folks.

Dan: Completely agree on all counts. The really vintage, valuable stuff today will likely remain collectable even after we're all dead and gone. If you can paddle water with it it may be even more valuable.... sadly :?

Ditto on 70's POS instruments too. Consider doing what we do and that is giving someone an unwanted lecture when they mention the words "sound" or "tone." We make no commitments regarding subjective subjects hence avoiding expectation of otherwise. Our invoices list quantifiable, defined operations only and it's served us very well. :)

It's also one of the major differences between repair Luthiers and builders. We repair Luthiers don't have to promise anything subjective such as tone while tone is a huge part of the dialogue between builders and prospective clients. Now you know why I repair and quit building, lot easier to promise things that can be measured. Also no insult to anyone intended, just stating what our world is really like on a daily basis.

Ernie: Yep and it can also be skewed by the fact that many of these valuable ones go into collections and disappear for 30 - 50 years before reemerging. That can impact supply greatly too. Most of these old "bursts" have a story that may include some famous folks. From the price of this one which is actually low.... for this guitar it must not have much of a story.

Glenn you may see vintage iPads for sale at what once were music stores... :) Hope not.... music is important.

JF I'm an October guy too born on the grounds, not in the grounds... there is a difference I could leave... of the now defunct Traverse City State Mental Hospital. My father was the Director of Psychology back in the day and we lived on the grounds.

That explains a lot, eh? ;)

Colin: It had better for that price! :)

Clay: or a new Condo. :)

Banjo: Yep this is Merica we can ask what ever we want. We may not get it but hey it's about the freedom. :)

Don: My current condo cost me less than this guitar.... :o :? :D

It was amusing to see a REcording King pop up advert while looking at the vintage Paul. Maybe they could just throw one of those in with the deal?

Yep several of them and we've spent some quality time with one too including some minor set-up adjustments.

I'm in the process of buying a house but I think I'll get this guitar instead. Do you think the case would fit a family of 4?

Putting as much bias aside (whichever way it might hang) as possible and ignoring the collectors price tag, all the while recognizing how subjective this question may be, how do they actually stack up against other guitars?

I've had time with a '60 into which I installed some original 59 pickups. It was a good les Paul. But I'm really an acoustic guy so my views are limited. It did sound quite nice, brighter than you might exoect but very nice overall.

What Dan pretty much said: It's still a Les Paul so that's what it has to be compared to in my view. With that said I'll add that g*bson's now coveted original PAFs were standard fare and largely unappreciated when my best friend Steve who was our drummer and I would hang out at the local Music Mart when we were kids. None of this stuff was special back then and the Les Paul in particular was a bit of a flop in terms of demand for it.

Comparing the 59's I handled with say an R-9 or the current crop of near exact g*bson reproductions the 59's are very good but they should be since they are the originals. Do I see a quarter million dollars and often more... for one of these? Not at my pay grade these days but I can certainly appreciate that this is America and if someone wants one, has the coin, can find a decent one go for it.

I had one for close to 30 years before I sold it. By 2000 I'd decided no guitar was worth that much money. I got myself a real nice 2000 R8 (loved the bigger neck) that had an acoustic ring close to that of my '59, then went about trying loads of pickups to get a set that sounded like clones of the old bugger... and never looked back. Those Rs are great guitars and my R8 sounds very much like my real 59 did, much more so than the original ‘58 and '60 I got to try ever did. So there you go.

Also this has some non-original parts like the '60 knobs and the newer tuners. I personally can't see that dropping the price by $100,000 but the collector market is a bit crazy. It does have a flame maple top and the original pickups so I wonder why this is so "cheap"?

I own a 1959 junior and it's a beast but have never touched a 58-60 standard. I've always liked the sound of P90s over humbuckers anyway.

I did a factory tour of Collings guitars a few summers ago and have to say their version of the LP standard is pretty amazing.

Completely agree John and I would love to have a 59 Jr. it's a bucket list guitar for me and they still are not stratospherically expensive, yet.

I mentioned this recently on here but I worked on a Collings I35 and want one of those now too. One of the finest guitars from a f*ctory I have ever played. Even the fret ends were hand dressed. Attention to detail and quality was out of the park.
