I worked on a Collings the other day and it had unslotted bridge pins. That was cool.

That could have come from us too I remember when Rick and Mario did the math here on 3 degree vs. 5 degree and then addressed where the slots came from and why they are not such a great idea for the bridge plate.

Collings is a great example in my experience of a shop that adopts all the high end stuff that makes sense and passes on the rest. Their fret work is superb too and my understanding is that they use a PLEK but finish up with very precise hand work. That's been our contention all along that PLEK is more of a production tool (and very accurate too) but that a skilled Luthier can obtain a higher degree of accuracy by hand. beehive :D

I deal with the whole "but I had it plekd" conversation all the time. Mostly cause a local shop near me makes a huge push on the marketing for it. I've always contended that a plek is good to keep some poor soul from grinding his soul away in some dark dingy workroom.

I bet it won’t be long before se start seeing side sound ports on factory guitars.

Factory soundports have been around for decades. Only thing is you have to wait for the proprietary, out of production preamp unit to fail and go in the trash to access the soundport.

You really see it with ukulele factories. I suspect that a lot of us that learned guitar making started using the same techniques for ukuleles and the factories had to catch up. Things like not spraying lacquer over the bridge, consistent neck shaping, radiused fretboards, and quality in general had to go up.

I’m seeing lots of sound ports ! Wasn’t that long ago that you only saw that in custom build situations.
