so..... i have gradually become more and more into early rockabilly...anyone care to guess what type of guitar tone this might be, in this Youtube link? it is a Johnny Horton song from about 1957. pretty certain it is a hollowbody, but i was wondering if it might be a semi-hollowbody, or a "real" one. i have always only played solidbodies, but i am interested in maybe taking a crack at a hollowbody build, or maybe just buying one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8T1ZBoU290 |

yeh that looks like maybe a Gretsch or something. pretty deep body, i guess its a real hollowbody and not an es-335...kinda what i figured. but who knows what was used on the actual recording thanks |

It is impossible to say conclusively exactly what guitar Grady Martin was playing on that track. Early in his career, Martin played Bigsby guitars, but switched to Gibson and Gretsch in the late '50s when humbuckers came in. Take a listen to Jerry Miller playing his Gretsch through a Deluxe and a Deluxe pedal, (which he calls a "Double Deluxe"), which to me has a similar sound. Jerry cites Grady Martin as one of his main influences. |
