Who uses CA for purflings AND bindings, and which viscosity/brand of glue do you use?

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

I use ca. I use thin and wick it in after taping the binding/purfling down with stewmac/lmi binding tape. I usually use the Bob smith stuff I pick up at the local hobby shop.

Generally, yes, on most woods, and always with great care to seal when in doubt. CA does unpleasant things to many woods, not just spruce. These days I use Gluboost Ultra thin — first to tack everything in place once firmly tied/taped dry, then again around all joints with tape removed. CA under tape is a PITA, so try to avoid that.

I use it on Ivoroid bindings with shell purflings. For wood bindings I use Fish or Titebond. Just make sure that you seal the hell out of the end grain with shellac.... Don't ask me how I know.

I also use thin CA, usually from BSI but sometimes Stick Fast because it’s what Woodcraft sells.

I like to tack the purfling in place separately, then the binding, then go back after pulling the tape and glue the rest. I would actually like to see someone else do this close up because I feel like I use too much glue. It’s not seeping into the box or anything but still, it feels like too much.

I use strips of HDPE to pin the purfling while I tack it in place. It makes the process longer but at least for me prevents surprises.

It turned out pretty well and sounds good to me. It’s warm, full, less high end than spruce.

BSI or GluBoost thin, with GluBoost where needed for a quick tack (but usually not, as natural cure is fairly quick on both). BSI thin is perfect for shell work, and will not yellow/discolor over time as will some cheaper CA glues.

And just a plug for Mr. Arnold's use of BSI CA Gold or Gold+ for the frequent Martin binding repairs we see...thin enough to penetrate on failing contact cement joints in the afflicted guitars, and much better stick/more permanent repair of peeling Bolteron on 1960's and later bindings.

We use Tightbond thin CA for purflings, but we seal the channels with shellac before gluing to avoid yellowing the spruce from glue bleed. Tightbond II for bindings and perflings.

Water thin (StewMac #10) wicked into the seams after the binding a purfling has been tightlly taped in place. I use a piece of UHMW to hold areas that might need a bit of additional persuasion. Both wood and plastic.

I'll add that I have become sensitized to CA and I have to wear a full respirator when I do this but it works so well that I keep doing it.
