Maybe he's cut a binding/purfling too wide for what he had planned?

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Or possibly you need a more complicated binding scheme because you made the channel too wide. oops_sign Make it fancy to fix errors. bliss

My fingers are too big for the buttons on my phone, too. :D

If you are trying to ask if other people have to use extra purfling lines to deal with a binding channel that is bigger than it needs to be for the pattern originally planned, the answer is yes. Just roll with it. There can be a small asymmetry to the new pattern, but it’s not like there are that many options. If you use wood binding, and use a dark wood for your binding, maybe the last outside purfling line can match the binding and blend in with it. Just an idea.

I always thought that one who fixes mistakes was the definition of a luthier! That said, I'm always surprised at how carved in stone many dimensions, colors, and wood choices ere, especially on violins.
Standardized parts for machinery is one thing.
I just decided to just have a very tiny binding on the back of the one I'm making now, just so it is clean and easy. There are no rules; are there?

Only two:

1. Never get involved in a land war in Asia.

2. Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line.

Just this afternoon I had 2 of my guitars side by side because the carpet cleaners were coming. The one on the left just has a black binding with no purfling. The one on the right has abelone with a couple of extra pieces in there.

The two guitars came out of the same mold and I found it interesting that the shape of the 2 bodies look quite different just looking at the different edge treatments
