I can hear it now, and no I really don’t think I’m a “glutton” for punishment. Yes, maybe “hungry”.

There was a lot of “what the h@!! Is wrong now!” and, “C’mon, Buddy, remember you’re doing this for ‘fun’”. But it’s printing in ABS reliably now and starting to make some useful jigs and things for my shop. I didn’t set it on fire in my driveway in some kind of Satanic ritual, so that’s a win?

I got to close up the box on acoustic guitar #40 this past weekend. I’ve been building now for 20 years at an average pace of two guitars per year so I pulled out a nice set of Cocobolo that I’ve had for about 18 years.

Beautiful set of Coco.

I build at about the same rate, though I am probably up to 4-5 a year now. After 25 years of doing this I only now have begun to use BRW.

I was going to donate of my guitars to an auction (in September) to benefit my antique car club because it had been for sale for so long, and the darn thing sold the next day. Now I'll probably have to do something like you to honor my commitment. Oh, well.

Very nice looking Tele project you've got there. Post pix when it's complete.

Struggled to find decent pickguards at a reasonable price, so had a go at making some from epoxy and dyes.
and this is where they ended up!

Thanks Hesh, I wasn't too sure but it's nice to have the encouragement. I've used the 3rd one on my latest L-00 build with natural spruce top, but now I have to choose one for a vintage sunburst build. I've another couple of pickguards on the go, so I'll have more to choose from. Not bad for a first attempt though.
Mike

Those pickguards look GREAT! How would you like to try for one to fit a '59 Les Paul Junior? Or sheets that we could shape to fit?

I'm sorry Chris, I'm only doing this for my recent builds. I would suggest you try it yourself, it's not that difficult. Just get some suitable epoxy and add a few drops of dye to the mix, and then spread it out on the template, add darker colours and move it around with a cocktail stick until you're happy with it. I used Colortone dyes Vintage Amber, Medium Brown and Tobacco Brown, which I already had and also some teflon sheet for the template. The ones you see in the picture are my first efforts and I'm certainly no expert.
There are about 3 Youtube videos of others showing the process, which gave me the idea to have a go myself. Good luck. Thanks Mike.

Vacuum forming lining using the bender. The form is offset -.350 to account for side and lining thickness + .030 for the vac bag. Learned this tip from Colin North. :)

That's always the part that gets me stuck when I think about doing this. What is a suitable epoxy. I would think you want something that get pretty hard to hold up to pick wear but is also somewhat flexible? I don't know much about epoxies.

Bryan, I know nothing myself about epoxies, so have to rely on what others have used. In one of the videos(links) I posted above, the person uses GlassCast 50, so that is what I've used. Not sure whether it's available on your side of the pond though. Another Youtuber says he uses a quality marine epoxy.
Thanks Mike

Love the way both the bindings and the sides have nice curl, that's going to pop great under finish. Very nice David!!!
