Nothing too exciting. Two OM’s for clients in the works and I delivered a sunburst to another guy. (Tony F finish)

A burst!!!! OMG!!!! :D

She's a beauty Terry and I've got its twin in my living room. Tony called that a "root beer burst" back in the day when he did one of mine and one for Lance. Don't let Colin see it :)

I haven't had the pleasure of Tony's services since 2007 so I don't have this contact info but someone else here might and would they please help David here with it?

Gearing up for an SG style electric.
I’m pretty excited about this one. The top will be carved, but not full like a Diablo SG.
I’m using black and purple hardware, the Maple body core and fretboard binding will be dyed to match the pickup color. My daughter sketched some butterflies that I will inlay with some gold and white mother of pearl.
Neck angle is 3 degrees, I’m using a fender type bridge, (TOM’s suck), string-through.
Fiji Mahogany, Maple, Ebony (basic Gibson recipe).
Pickups are Dimarzio air zone and super distortion. I tried Dimarzio on my last build and finally achieved the black sabbath sound I was yearning for (tube amp, no effects).
Oh, my son wired new LED lights in my shop connected to a wall switch. It’s like a bright sunny day.

Just finished up a 1980 Martin D-18 that needed a new top (original completely comprised by previous repairs), neck reset, frets, tuning machines and miscellaneous. I finished the top with an amber toner in the lacquer. Got the new binding for the top to blend in pretty well with the sides. The top was made with pre 70's specs including scalloped braces, small maple bridge plate all glued with hot hide glue. The pick guard was made with epoxy and Transtint dyes.

That's the best looking D-18 top I've ever seen, beautiful work Barry!

In case anyone is interested, the color of the top finish was achieved with a couple of lacquer coats tinted with 2 drops of TransTint Amber. This gave a color that was too yellow and it had a very slight greenish tint. So I applied a coat with one drop of TransTint Reddish Brown. Bingo! I would describe this color combination as golden.

In the past, some of my most interesting finishes have had layers of different colored toners stacked on top of each other. When you move the instrument around different highlights show up. Sort of a happy accident.

By the way, the pick guard also uses Amber and Reddish Brown dyes.

Mostly doing inlays on 2 guitars. The G & palm below was done with my CNC

Image

The Jim Morris logo and signature was done by Depaule Luthier supply and then I cut the pockets with my CNC

The Egyptian themed guitar has a Scarab Beetle on the peg head. It is a faux turquoise inlayed in white MOP. The 3rd fret has an Egyptian beetle wing
of white MOP inlayed with gold MOP and Faux Turquoise. Also done with my CNC

Interesting discussion about Robbie O'Brien's video on CNC at viewtopic.php?f=10101&t=55435

Beautiful work!

Well since we’re on the topic of CNC, here is something I made for my son for Christmas. It’s a flamed maple guitar hanger with the lyrics to Let it Be laser engraved onto it.

I like it! Where did you get the actual hanger parts? I need that for my growing collection of guitars I never get around to playing.

BULLETSHAKER Guitar Hanger Wall Mount Hook Stand 180° Adjustable w/Slat Wall Adapter 10pcs https://a.co/d/3ujwdc3

I bought a 10 pack so I could make another hanger for my shop area. I’m going to laser the logo on there, should look nice!

Looks good Brad and great theme.

Michael, I wish I had a CNC for doing inlay (and other things). I attended a Judy Threet from Threet Guitars, inlay workshop about a dozen years or so ago. Wow, can she cut shell and whatever else. I learned a lot from her. If I had her skills, I wouldn't need the CNC at least for inlays. :)

Keeping to the CNC theme - we installed new kitchen cabinets and countertops over the holidays.
I’ve repurposed the sink cutout…..

Well, today was a major brain fart day in these parts. I bend sides on a bending iron and I always start by doing the waist bend first. I was bending the second side for the current instrument. It went beautifully and fit the target shape exactly but then I realized I had done the waist bend where the upper bout bend goes. Argh! Never done that before. In my (partial) defense, the waist and upper bout bends are close together on this body shape, but still it was a total brain fart. So, I straightened it back out and did the waist bend in its correct location.

Doing the bend for the upper bout in the correct direction was actually going reasonably well until it suddenly let go at the tightest point in the bend. Bummer. I had noticed that when flattening out the side at the upper bout that the wood wasn't reverse bending evenly. It was kind of like when you bend a piece of coat hanger wire and then try to straighten it back out but it still has little kinks you can't quite get out. Bending it fully in one direction and then trying to fully reverse it just wasn't in the cards for this piece.

Sucks because the first side bent perfectly. I now have a bent orphan side and it's on to a do over with another set of sides. I'll add this one to my list of one-time (hopefully) mistakes.
