| Post subject: | Bracing for quilted maple |
Hey folks, I just picked up a quilted maple back and sides from people liquidating their inventory. The sides are pre-bent and the back pre-braced. The bracing is much thicker than I have seen on other guitars (I will post a photo later). Is it normal to increase bracing mass for quilted maple? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

thats a martin style bracing plane down the # 3 & 4 braces. How thick is the back? Mike |

Sorry for the long delay. I was on vacation in Kings Canyon...beautiful country...marvelous trees. The thickness of the back is 0.110. The spruce top is also0.110. Not sure what kind of spruce it is but I'll add a picture.

I do most of my backs at .090”, and most sides .075”-.085”… |

The quilted maple back being a little thicker than commonly seen with other species doesn't bother me - it is a lighter weight wood, not particularly stiff and sometimes will warp in strange ways if made too thin. I agree with Mike Collins - the lower back braces should be thinned enough to add some flexibility to allow the back to cope with humidity changes. |

Backs often work best when the two upper braces are tall and narrow and the two lower ones are low and wide. It's almost as if you simply started with them more or less the same and stood the upper ones on edge and laid the lower ones out flat. |
