So, every so often, someone gets out of this guitar-making thing, and needs to get rid of their guitar-making-specific stuff (I’ve been to a few of these). Sometimes, it is the family that has to get rid of it after the guitar maker has passed on (I’ve been to one of these). It’s a recognized thing for woodworking in general, but with guitar-making being practiced by fewer people than those who work wood in general, there are fewer takers for this stuff, so harder to make happen.

Some OLF participants might remember jmanter. He recently posted in the classifieds for folks to come get his remaining guitar-making stuff, which was at his East Tennessee home (until a move to the northeast this coming weekend). I think I was the only person who took him up on this. I gave him $300 for it all, but he probably would have given it to me for free. He just didn’t want it all to go to the dump, which was its fate, had I not driven down there yesterday to pick it up.

My $300 bounty:

Not having any visibility of it, I've never been able to gauge participation, etc.

Yeah, it was a long drive. 6 hours each way, and an extra hour for some construction that messed up the drive down there. But there’s probably over $2,000 worth of tools in this haul. It was worth the hassle.

The classifieds are not all that active, but they aren’t dead or useless. Worth signing up, in my opinion.

Doing some actual math, the retail value of new versions of all of the above listed items would be $4,963.00. And there are a few small hand tools I have not counted in that total. Figure it is all worth half the retail value for being used, and it comes to $2,481.50-ish that I got for $300 in cash, $140 in gas, and a long day of driving.

So, yeah, it it worthwhile to be a vulture!

Good score and I’m glad it worked out! I’ve found in general that luthiers leftovers are leftovers for a reason. I’ve been disappointed many times flipping through piles of the right stuff that is just wrong.

I hear you, Ed. Some days you get lucky, and other days, you get Al Capone's vault. I did call jmanter before I drove down, to make sure there would be at least some things worth the trip. I recommend investigation before investment of time.

I saw the ad but was too lazy to drive from Western North Carolina. Oh well, I don't have room for any more stuff anyway! Good score, and good for jmanter for not just hauling it off. I was doing a final move from East Tennessee a year ago, and know what it's like to be up against the clock and needing to resolve some "stuff" issues quickly...

Need is such a strong word. I didn’t need any of it. However, a lot of it will replace versions I already had, or will be given (or sold cheaply) to other folks just getting started. The things that are new to me will be be interesting to experiment with, but not spend much money on. And (all together now) you can’t have too many clamps.

If there had been literally any other person willing to go, I would have skipped it, because I don’t need this stuff. But it made me very uncomfortable when jmanter told me he would throw it away if someone doesn’t come get it, and I was the only person interested. That kind of waste is something I will do a lot to avoid; like take a day off work in my air conditioned office and drive 13 hours in 95F heat to pick up a bunch of tools.

Having done it, I’m glad I did!
