I just received an e-mail from Hibdon Hardwood, telling their customers that they are closing for good. They will be selling off inventory, as well as machines. I'm saddened by the news (they are my favorite mahogany supplier), but I wanted to let those of you interested in buying larger quantities know that this may be a time to do so.

Farewell, Hibdon. Sorry to see you go.

One of my favorite suppliers. I was going to post this and you beat me to it. I am totally bummed. They used to have the most amazing figured mahogany and Spanish cedar.

Dang! That's sad news.

That part about the Mexican government seizing the container of wood, they've done that with properties that American ex-pats thought they had bought.

I can't count how many wood suppliers have come and gone, mostly gone since I've been on this forum. Must be a very tough slog or or even tougher these days.

That will put a crimp in the neck blank market for sure. Hibdon has been a weekly (if not more often) browse site for me for a long time. Great necks and a very nice web site to make selections. Always looking for that special neck wood and my best figured hog came from them, Sp Cedar too.

My other exotic wood source had a large shipment of cocobolo held up somewhere for a long time, I'm not sure they ever got their wood (a few years back).

Any small business is tough going these days with regs, taxes, fees and PAPERWORK. Add international issues and I can't even imagine.

I wonder what the inflation rate of instrument woods and hardware is but I probably don't want to know. Luckily being a life long "special" wood collector is paying off for me and whoever inherits my stash.

Just FYI, I ordered some mahogany neck blanks from them today, and nosed around the website a bit before deciding what to buy. There is a limit of two per customer for their mahogany neck blank plus heel block special (one of my favs of their offerings). They seem to be out of full billets (3x4xwhatever) of mahogany. But they seemed to have plenty of the 1x3xwhatever mahogany neck blanks, so I bought a bunch of those. I have plenty of short mahogany blocks on hand for cutting and adding matching heel blocks, so I can make these work.

It’s a darn shame they have to close.

That is certainly sad news. I've know Bill for over 25 yrs. He started getting tops from us 2-4 yrs ago and was apparently doing good with them, as evidenced by re-orders. I was alway so happy to have opportunity send him referrals for the hardwoods.

We have been meeting there yearly for Gateway Area Luthier's Meeting for the last 12+ yrs Bill Has never charged us a dime for the use of the facility for the gathering . He has also given a discount to those who are there when they buy. Bill and Nancy are both wonderful People . I will Miss seeing them and having the shows there. Thank you tremendously for all you have done over the years Hibdon ....

Just to echo what Wud said above. everything about going there for our gatherings has been a real treat. From the hospitality to getting to look through seemingly endless stacks of back and side sets. I will miss them for sure!

Our first gathering there was where I realized I could take instrument making seriously. Until I met a bunch of makers in person, I was just playing around making instrumentish woodworking projects. That place will always have a special place in my heart.

Sigh....All good things come to an end I guess. I loved visiting there when I was living in St Louis. Here's wishing Bill and the whole team there great luck in their next endeavors.
