I recently put a set of Rubner slot head bourzuki/mando tuners on an old neglected Italian bowl back I was getting back into playing shape. As far as I could tell, they are the only production four-on-a-plate slothead mandolin tuners available. They really were very good tuners for the price.

Yes they are and the fist time I worked with them and found out the price it didn't rubner me the wrong way either.

I used Rubner on this uke. The pinning on the back side of the tuner protruded out really far and I had to drill a small hole in the side of the headstock to accommodate it. That’s the only way I could get them to sit flat. I read online where some people filed them off but that didn’t seem like a good idea.

Do the guitar tuners have this same thing?

A lot of the old tuners were made that way and part of the installation was making matching divots so the tuners would sit flat. Considering that the the worm gear bearings are essentially riveted to the plates, filing them flat would be a bad idea, as you have surmised.
Piling on, Rubner's do seem to be a nice quality tuner for a reasonable price.

When in doubt, feature it!

I made the headstock an 1/8” too narrow - The tuners touched, so I offset them - the client loves it! Oh, and +1 for Rubners!

This rosette went in 180° out - The fretboard wasn’t gonna cover it, so I made a little shell dot to hide the f-up…

Michael, When I saw that rosette in your other thread, I thought that it was really neat. I started thinking a out ways to copy that theme in one of my rosettes. You should never have told us.

That rosette looks better than if it had been done "right" I like the headstock too, though if done intentionally I would offset the slot endpoints to match. It would look especially nice with fan frets. I'll have to try that sometime...

The fingerboard end treatment is also very nice. Is that a CNC routed slot with 3 pieces of veneer carefully mitered and glued into it?

I have once glued a pyramid bridge with the saddle below the string pins. I have also made a 7 string pyramid bridge - and not for a Russian guitar. The first calamity was easy to fix, the 7 string pyramid bridge is still waiting for a Russian to enter the shop...

I suppose I could’ve remained quiet about - not really my way, plus now I know how to add the detail if I want to. Not sure I would have tried it if necessity hadn’t required a solution.

Agreed! Offset slots would look really cool on a FF guitar! Yes, the fretboard purfling detail is done as you described.

It’s done on my cnc. I first cut the pocket where the mistake was, I cut rings from a small chunk of ebony, then cut a ring out of a piece of maple, and finally cut a piece of shell for the middle. I installed the pieces, flooded it with CA, and finally leveled it. Done.

Thanks, the purfling makes it look 'on purpose' I think.
