I came across a tonewood supplier I hadn't heard of before -- Elite Tonewoods. They've got Pernambuco and quite a few other quality sets at reasonable prices.

Hey Tim I don't know Bruce Sexhour (spelling) but he's in the west coast group that our friend Pat here on the OLF and Link Van Cleave belong too. Bruce built with it a lot IIRC and he may have or know of sets for you.

Hey it's good to connect with you. Yes, Mary and I are doing great ... knock on a good piece of wood ;)

I did contact Bruce a few days ago and he does not have any sets for sale. The link that Simon posted look like Pernambuco's Mexican cousin Chakte Viga or Caesalpinia Platyloba to my eye and not the true Brasil wood variety of Caesalpinia Echinata. The sets in Simon's link are missing the darker reddish color with green and gold streaking like the sets that I have built with in the past. I have sent an email to that sites owner asking for true confirmation of the specific botanical variety so we will see what transpires.

Hi Tim, anyone selling guitar sets of "pernambuco" are most likely chacte viga. It has been a long time since I've seen any pernambuco material any wider than 3"-4"

I do have a couple sets. Not that interested in selling, but possibly trading for something else unique?
Personally, I would like a Lucky Strike top : )

The darker reddish brazilwood from the tree was less desirable for bow making, and was used for less expensive bows.
Chakte Viga does seem very close in it's properties to Pernambuco, except that it has less radial shrinkage, so if you can find vertical grain wood (like we prefer) it might be less prone to cracking.

I bought some sets from https://www.domexhardwoods.com/ many years ago. They don't list any on their web site, but I guess you could give them a call if you're still in the market.

The few instruments I built with it turned out nice, hard to say how much the wood had to do with it. Working with materials that expensive sure keeps you on your toes, so maybe you tend to make a better effort all around... ;-)

Its easy to work, very dense, but bends and glues well IIRC. It bleeds its orange-red colors like crazy when in contact with water, so it's easy to see why it was valued as a source for dye back in the day.
