So for you guys who glue up a big block of the stuff are you finding a nice flat sawn piece of what ever wood your binding is then laminating your purfling sheets to that and ripping them so that the binding is vertical grain for bending? And if so where are you finding woods like rosewood for doing that? |

And if so where are you finding woods like rosewood for doing that? Yes basically that. I do a lot of curly maple binding which is easy to find. I also buy any interesting sticks I find that are long enough and sock them away. Until recently, I was lucky enough that my Woodcraft got exotic offcuts from Hibdon and sold it by the pound. Every time I went in there, I'd look for long off cuts and buy them for the future. I have also bought narrow exotic boards to use. a 3/4 board will get lots of binding since you can glue on the side purfs then rip down to approximate binding height before you rip off your strips. That gives you plenty of height to make bindings for the next time. Alternately, you can use a narrower stick and laminate side purfs to both sides then rip then in half to make two logs to rip strips from. I have done both. It depends on what you have to start with. |
