Just saw a post about this on Facebook. Anyone familiar with Iulius Guitars?

Mastering the sound of the acoustic guitar https://a.co/d/4mFnoWE

He mentioned Greenfield as a contributing builder, maybe just in sharing techniques, I’m not sure.

Interesting and pricey. No reviews yet but kind of tempting. Thanks for the heads up.

Big problem for a lot of us is by the time you have built enough guitars and seen them back a few years later to get a handle on what does what your hearing has gotten so bad from old age the whole thing is moot. :D :D

42$ to dial in your tone seems worth it to me. It sounds like a Gore/Gilet for Dummies. I’ll likely pick up a copy at some point, thanks for posting.

From what I've seen of his posts on FB he seem to have studied the Gore/Gilet book and been reborn....
Except I've never seen him mention or attribute Gore/Gilet, even despite some people picking him up on it.

Looks a lot like a straight rip off of Gore/gilet. Of course he might have worked it all out for himself...

A very inelegant way of mass loading the sides externally.

Maybe his explanations are very clear and make it worthwhile. Do let us know if anyone buys it what you think.

Cheers Dave

It may be more of a users guide to the Gore/Gilet books rather than a ripoff, but I’ll have to buy to find out. Next payday. Just in case there’s something more I can squeeze out. I can say that for me, there’s definitely a before/after with the GG books and my guitars.

Ordered. Should have it by the end of the week. I'll report back after I get my mitts on it.

Yup, the "A complete package of calculation and simulation tools is available for download," may be an attraction for those struggling with the maths and spreadsheets

FWIW, I am completely incapable of doing any of the math in the G/G books, but you don’t have to be able to do the math. All the needed info is in the summaries written in plain ole English.

I didn’t even try, I read the material and use the spreadsheets to calculate. It’s totally possible the spreadsheet is not correct and I’ve been wasting time. I would never know. :D

I just bought it and read it (after Brad’s tipoff). I usually buy and read anything I can on the topic and usually learn something from each book, some more things than others. To me, this book seems mostly definitional. He goes down the same path as Gore/Gilet with much less detail, but enough for understanding the concepts. Gore/Gilet is easier to practically apply. Gore/Gilet is expensive, but if you join StewMax, the half-price for books deal more than pays for the subscription fee in that book.

That said, while I got some tips from Gore/Gilet, it didn’t change any of my practices. Nicoletti disdains free plate tuning. I won’t give that up either.

Hi Brad, I developed a spreadsheet based on the Gore/Gilet calculations for top thickness a few years back and posted it here a couple of years ago.
Note that I sent the spreadsheet to Trevor himself and got the seal of approval.
So if you are using my spreadsheet, you are in likely in the ballpark...

Rob

Thanks, Rob! I searched old posts and found it a few years back - Luthier Spreadsheet Combined was the doc name. Is that it? Equations, fingerboard, arc layout, etc... sheets in the workbook?

Don't think so Brad.
The link to the spreadsheet is here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/18ahHbj_KoVW7wiIxOkqo3r9ujJtirCso/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=106696316853042284696&rtpof=true&sd=true
Once you open it, download as a .xlsx file to open it in Excel.
The "Template" tab references the formulae and page number in the books.
The T1 and B1 tabs are the Top and Back working sheets where you enter your findings.

Gore/Gillet Cliff Notes is not such a bad idea imho. But even with Cliff Notes you should still have the main volume.

Has anyone heard of Giuliano Nicoletti before? Is he a master builder?

I had the same question, John. I’ve not heard of him, here is his website - https://www.iuliusguitars.com

To be fair, I had never heard of Gilet guitars before the book either. :)

Looks like he's an acoustic engineer so he's got some cred anyway. I'll wait to hear more opinions on the book :)

Thanks, Rob!

I did a compare using sample data and the results are the same in both sheets. So there's that. :)

While I didn't delve too deeply into the Gore/Gilet methods, it looks to me like this book has a lot of the same or similar info, with less detail and not so much of the proofs or derivations of the G/G books. He does list G/G in his references. It's good info for me and with less verbage compared to G/G, it suits my unreliable attention span. For content, I think it's worth the $42, though it is cheaply bound, not a pretty coffee table presentation.
