I've read a number of threads here and am still on the fence. I'm considering doing a dark pore fill with Timbermate over a shellac sealed mahogany neck. I usually just use zpoxy but that's obviously not a dark pore fill. Timbermate is easily available locally which is why I'm considering it. Either the ebony or dark walnut. Steve Smith had some good posts but unfortunately the pics are dead. If you can repost the finished product, that would be appreciated Steve. Any other suggestions other than Pore-O-Pac would be appreciated as well. Final finish is nitro.

Hi Darrel, I'll see what I can find. Interesting that the pics are dead, I always post pics directly to the forum. The hog was so light colored in the last couple of necks I did were that I sprayed them with ColorTone in shellac and an airbrush.

Here's one. I usually fill pores with a darker color, I just like the way it looks. I’ve used the dark colored Timbermate before but switched to ColorTone in AquaCoat 4 or 5 years ago. For this one I used a dark walnut ColorTone in AquaCoat. Finish is French polished Royal Lac. Hope this helps.

Here’s the neck on the guitar. Sorry, not a very good photo.

Looks fantastic Steve. Exactly what I'm looking to achieve. Any particular reason for switching from the Timbermate? Thanks for the tips.

There was nothing I disliked about the Timbermate. I just tried the Aquacoat and liked it so I kept using it.

If you are used to using Zpoxy, you could just add some epoxy dye to it.

One thing that I don’t like about the high gloss poly finish when coupled with a clear porefill is how you can see the edges of the pores when held up to a light. It almost looks like surface texture but really it’s the light refracting off the edge of the pore (I think). I wonder if this would be solved by a darkened pore filler. I guess it would?

Might have to give it a try, thanks for bringing this up, Darrel!

Sorry to be negative but what you are seeing in the first photo are pores that are not completely filled.

I have tried every type of filler and keep going back to paste wood pore filler. It just works.

Barry is right, however, I don’t care if the pores show a bit as I prefer my finishes to look more organic. But I don’t think that matters in this case since the question was about color and there is a significant difference when using a dark filler no matter which filler you choose. I have used oil based fillers and epoxy too; I added color to them as well.

This is Rockler's Black Wunderfil waterbased Wood Filler, mixed with TransTint Black, over Behlen Vinyl Sealer. NC lacquer top coat.

I first used Aqua Coat on this same neck- it turned white about a weeks later, after six coats of lacquer. Had to strip off the lacquer and it took me a week to figure a way to get that stuff out of the pores. I got SH lucky and did get it all out. I tried but could not duplicate it (turning white).
