That's what you do when sanding a hole near the binding in the upper bout.

Not sure what its called. The cutaway is on the top and not on the back. Im sure I've seen someone post pictures with a tutorial on this site, or my old age is catching up with me. Any body know what im talking about? |

It's also called a bevel cutaway. It can facilitate access to the upper frets while minimizing the loss of air mass in the upper bout. |

A guy I know made one by holding the box up to the free end of an edge sander to cut the scoop, than used thin flexible veneers and a cardboard tube as a clamp on caul to fit the space. |

I'm pretty sure Pat Foster (RIP) made a very nice one but I don't know if he posted pictures here or on another forum. It was a beauty and I found a picture. Pat was a great guy who shared info freely and helped me out several times. He made some gorgeous guitars too and his workmanship was always superb. Here's one I did on my version of a 12-fret 000 a few years back. Red spruce top, BRW B&S, ebony binding. Attachment: necon.jpg The simple 'scoop' one looks too much like a belt sander accident to me, so I figured out how to tie it into the binding. It works well with black ebony. |

rbuddy: Thanks. That requires a bit of hand work, with a very sharp knife, to cut the purfling rabbets after the cutaway is glued on. I'm sure somebody could figure out how to do it with CNC, but I just spend the time. |
