Does ASIA Still Exist?

Does anyone know if ASIA still exists? I have not received a magazine in
some time. I thought my membership expired at the end of 2007 but have
received no renewal instructions. I am just wondering if it is still around.

I was chatting with an ASIA board member recently and I guess they are reorganizing (new director/publisher). They are looking for substantive member written articles for the magazine. I for one am looking forward to the 09' Symposium which I hear may be back in the Northeast.

Jim,

     When you decided to quit because we brought Dick Boak back onto the board, you made it perfectly clear that you wished to abandon, not only your position as Editor, but your membership in it's totality. You were, at that time, expunged from the data base by your own request.

     And yes, I've resigned as Executive Director. Those of you who are members should have been able to read about that in the December issue - #62 - by now, but instead, you'll soon receive a bulk mailing explaining why the issue is late. You actually ought to have the magazine within a week or so.

     I wish you all the best in the future, but now it's time for me to re-energize my own business efforts. Running ASIA, even when it's not running perfectly, has been fun, but consuming.

   ASIA may have suffered a few bruises but will do fine. Bill has been replaced and ASIA is moving ahead. Articles for the magazine are always welcome.

No one knoww how much effort Bill put into ASIA, (well I do).
He is running a full shop with many orders and at same time,spending hours on phone and computer, giving every bit of good effort into this organization as he does his instruments. Not an easy job with all that goes on, with many issues, most not known to public. Think it easy, try it.
He took over when things in ASIA not going well.
He deserves much appreciation for his time, and the great efforts. He has brought ASIA to point of good artical's, on time GuitarMaker, and symposium. He did the symposium in mid america, so folks could come from all over and not just the east.

For the record, I never requested to be "expunged" from the database. In
fact, I did receive all issues of the magazine until a few months ago.

Secondly, my membership was paid through the end of 2007. As I was
paid in full and made no request for a refund or cancellation, my
membership should not have been cancelled.

Finally, Bill, at the time I made my decision to resign as editor of the
magazine, I kept the reason for my decision totally private and did not
broadcast it to anyone on this forum, or any other forum, as I did not
want to bring Dick's name into my decision. I am very disappointed that
you chose to make that matter public.

Bill and Jim many, many thanks to you both for your very fine and greatly appreciated efforts.

I am not sure if you are aware at how very much many of us appreciate what you do and have done on behalf of furthering the free exchange of information regarding guitar building.

If there truly is a golden age of guitar building your guys funded it with your dedication to sharing with us all.

Hey guys,

I'm sorry about this.

I posted what I thought was a simple question. I've never been able to log
onto the association Web site, so I posted here because I thought
someone could give me an answer.

When I logged on and saw the response directed at me I felt I had to
make a single statement back providing my side of the story. I will no
longer post in this thread and am sorry it turned bad so quickly.

I too would like to thank Bill & Jim for the time they put into ASIA. ASIA is a volunteer organization and any time donated to it should be appreciated. But, as a volunteer organization, we have to expect turnover. The professionals have businesses run and ASIA is the sort of organization that will consume all your time if you let it. The position of director seems to be an especially thankless job.

One of the characteristics of a group like ASIA is that it will change over time. Its fortunes will rise and fall depending on who's doing what. That is inherent in the structure.

One thing is clear. The membership has to actively participate. Go to the Symposiums. Write an article for Guitarmaker. Some of the excellent tutorials that have appeared here would have made great articles, for example. And, there's nothing like seeing your name in print. I still get comments about the article that I wrote a couple of years ago and requests for plans for the instrument. (Hint, Hint, MichaelP)

So, once again, So long Bill, and thanks for all the fish.

YES!!


1. craftsmanship skill building tips and tricks with loads of pictures


2. guitar design/building theory


3. guitar string comparisons


4. finishing techniques (think how to)


5. how to make purflings, bwb trim pieces, etc.


6. wood comparisons


I could go on.... The main thing is that it should help all of us to be better builders and better craftsmen. While looking at the work of masters in the business is a good thing, it really doesnt do anything to help me build better guitars unless there are some skill building lessons included.
