I want to start to build guitars from scratch. Do I need to buy all of my own tools or are there machine shops near NW Ohio/Southeast MI where one can buy time to use the equipment?

Check in your local yellow pages under wood working. I live near Grand Rapids MI. and I know we have at least one place locally that offers wood working classes and a wood working "club" where you pay a monthly fee for access to their shop. You may find you have a similar situation in your area.

You need to look for a carpentry or wood working shop not a machine shop.

I suspect it will be hard to find a shop that would be willing to allow their tools, chisels saws and such to be rented out more less the shop space. Most wood workers will tell you that they have too much money and time fine tuning there hand tools to allow just anyone to use them. I think the odds are more likely that you can find an experienced builder in your area that my be willing to tutor you but expect to bring your own hand tools.

You may also want to look into a 2 week lutherie course. You pay a set amount and walk away with a guitar you built. In most cases they provide instruction, tools and consumables.
