My first build fell over and the headstock snapped off.
I repaired it with hyde glue then came time to re-lacquer.
After the first session of 3 coats, I got a single fisheye.
After the next coat, the one turned to three, spaced about an inch apart on the front of the headstock.
I had a picture after the first coat of lacquer and there was no fisheye. IT got introduced somewhere in the process (Mohawk Rattle Can Stringed Instrument Lacquer). I'll never know how it got there, or exactally what contaminate caused it. Probably
sauce lol.Here is what I did to fix it:
What Didn't Work:
#1 Sand Back the lacquer and shoot it again. FAIL
#2 REALLY sand back the lacquer and shoot it again. FAIL
#3 spot sand the spot again, really good. FAIL
#4 Drop fill with a coat of thin CA glue. FAIL
#5 Sand back and drop fill TWICE with CA. FAIL
What DID work:
Sand back entire face of headstock to bare wood.
Seal coat the headstock with Zingger De-waxed Blonde Shellac in rattle can.
Spray a bit of shellac into the lid, drop fill right on where the fish eye was with tiny artists brush for good luck.
After 24 hours, scuff sand.
Triumph!
Six wet coats of nitro lacquer (from the gun this time) and no fisheye.
Would love to post a pic but its still being lacquered. After 6 coats on the neck and 6 on the headstock, its truly invisible except to maybe (maybe) a repair expert. Pretty stoked about that.
Wish I would have taken a picture of the fisheye, but I didn't.
I'm trying to get the broken one fixed, while at the same time, lacquering #2. So I already had everything out to shoot the headstock with my $35 gun from Stew Mac. I keep typing because a rainy front moved in today and I had to stop spraying (outside).
Hope this helps someone get right to the fix a fisheye or two and avoid all the time I consumed on FAILS.
