Nice design and execution. Makes the rosette I have planned pretty underwhelming :?

Did you bleed on the guitar top? (I did on my first one. Man, that sucks.)
I think the rosette concept is excellent. Too bad about the miters. I have trouble joining the ends of binding and purfling, too. But you are probably the only one who's really going to find fault with the miters. I predict most of your friends and acquaintances are just going to go into "gee whiz" mode when they see it. Very nice!

Luckily I did not bleed on the soundboard. You can see in the picture that my work board has a few new stains though.

Thank you everyone for the comments! :)

It's nice that you all you gents love the rosette... because I had to rout it out and make a new one [headinwall] [headinwall] [headinwall]

In retrospect i probably could have avoided it. However, I thought of lots of better alternatives about 1/2 second after I finished this rosette. Oh well, I don't hate it, so it's time to move on.

You can see I sanded through the purfling.
Image

All that hard work routed away.

New rosette installed.

Onward. Brace layout

Before bridge patch (it's glued on now)
Image

Fretboard slotted.
Image

Fretboard is waaay too thin, so I'm gluing it to some mahogany to beef it up. I'll be binding it with some black walnut.
Image

While I was waiting for glue to dry, I CA'd the white/blue/white purfling onto the binding.

What a shame about the rosette. At least you didn't need to retop as a result! The new one is nice but obviously not as intricate as the old one.

The story is that after running my SB through the thickness sander, I used my palm sander to get to a 400 grit finish. I broke my recently adopted rule of not sanding rosettes with a ROS because the cedar sands much faster than the hardwood and leaves the rosette uneven with the SB. gaah

sooo, i just ran the SB through the thickness sander a couple more times to knock those high spots off. Turns out I had very little purfling left. Those extra passes through the thickness sander sanded right through the white purfling.

I decided (at the time) that routing out the existing purfling perfectly was going to be next to impossible, so i had to re-establish a pilot hole and rout a new rosette.

In retrospect, I could've made a plug for the sound hole with it's own pilot hole and that would've worked for routing out the purfling. It's just that I kept looking at the calendar and thinking "I don't have time for this..."

I got lots done! Hopefully I can keep the momentum and get it finished in time.

Top glued on. I need more go-bars...
Image

Back purfling glued in. I decided to make it all white purfling (instead of w/blue/w) because I didn't to try to figure out how to miter the center where the curves join together.
Image

Binding channels routed. (.090" & 0.190" iirc)
Image

End graft routed and chiseled.
Image

Installed
Image

mockup of fingerboard. I'm liking this color combo.
Image

Starting the purfling mitering.
Image
Image
Image
Image

Bindings going on. I use fish glue for this.
Image

Turned out nice.
Image

This is why you order extra binding. Since i processed my own binding and I barely had enough, I did not have extra when I screwed up. I snipped the bindings (pre-bend) at the waist mark instead of the cutaway mark. I had to get a little creative to fix it.
Image

cut-away bindings being bent
Image

More bindings being glued.
Image

Starting to shape the heal. I've got a few more war wounds, as you can see.
Image

Headstock shape traced
Image

After cleaning my desk off, I cut the headstock shape.
Image

As I said before, it's coming along. Tonight I hope to get the body all sanded and to start pore filling. I also need to start making the bridge.

That's all for now!

Looking really nice, Marcus! How did you cut the channels for binding on the tips of the cutaway? Beautiful purfling and binding job. [:Y:]

Wow! That is really looking good. I'm glad I entered this contest. I didn't follow the last one very closely. Now that I am following along, I am really being inspired by the quality of work I am seeing. I have a LOT to learn.

I did it John Mayes style. You route the bindings on the top and back and just use a saw and chisel to notch out the vertical binding strips. I used a fret saw because it had a depth set on it.

Here are a few updates. I did my first coat of Z-poxy on the back. While that was drying I did the purfling and binding on the headstock. Some of those bends were a bear.

Headstock, will do pearl inlay next

Back pore-filled w/ Z-Poxy.

Tony, I think you are going to have a hard time getting anyone to care about your ukulele!

I just saw my mistake. I meant to say, "It's going to be hard to get people to care about my ukulele, but not this guitar."

How did my autocorrect screw up so badly?

It's been established that nobody cares about Tony's uke, everybody cheered when he punched it in the face. beehive
