Really nice! It all looks great. It looks like the neck might on the wider side? I'm just now doing a 12 fretter for me and I'm leaning towards a little wider neck. How wide is it at the nut?

Thanks,
Danny

Andy, Danny, thanks mates!
The neck, at the nut, is 1 3/4". Pretty standard.

Thanks for the kind word, Michael.
I'll have to plan another one of these, then take pics, then write it all up. Which means, kudos [clap] to all you guys that have taken the trouble to post tutes! (Still easier, though, than tooting posts...)
Anyway, next go-around I'll try to remember to do that.
Thanks again,

Steve

Thank you, Josh! You know, it does play pretty well.
At least, it did when it left the shop after the "fine tweaking" session....

Gorgeous Steve! Absolutely stunning. I picked up some red cedar for a future project and would love to use it with a steel string guitar. But I don't have a good feel yet for that top wood. I need to locate a few steel strings with cedar tops and hear how they sound.

Ken

Wow, thanks guys! This is getting more mileage than expected.

Arbredelaforet, the French have such a refined sense of style, that your words are very high praise indeed! I'm honored.
The shape is 000-ish in nature. A larger lower bout than a true 000, but fairly close in other points. It was decided upon by the owner after submitting 4 shapes to pick from. He chose this one.

Ken, thank you! Shane had some good advice about top wood, and part of it went something like this: try it. Work with it. Get a feel for it.
WRC is different from spruce, and certainly gives a different sound, one that is quite pleasant. This guitar is one of the loudest instruments I've built, so the stuff works.

This one is so pretty it's pulled me out of "lurk mode" to comment, and say Hi to buddy Steve.
I just have a weakness for walnut/cedar guitars. I have heard it said by more than one luthier that it is a "magic combination". And I know what they mean! Each guitar I build with those woods has turned out great. Don't be afraid of the cedar tops! I did have two of them fail because I took them too thin, but now I go a bit heavier than usual and thinned the braces a bit more and that did the trick...that is what the old cedar Lowdens are built like too.
I have some of that nice Claro from Larry too and I can't wait to finish the two octave mandolins I am building with it, I have a guitar from that stuff in the works too!
Good job Steve! I wish I could play that one.

Howdy Mark, glad to bring you out of hiding.
And thanks for the kind words! I wish you could play this one too.
It's the same shape/size as the one you played at the GAL steel string listening session. Except this one doesn't have a cutaway.

Mark also had a walnut guitar there. Very nice instrument, and his playing ain't too shabby, either. [clap]
Post some pics when you get that Davis Claro built into instruments.

Steve

I sure will, Steve and thanks- the guitar you had at the GAL meeting was great!

I'm building an octave mandolin from the Claro, it's going to be a while yet but I promise photos here when it's done.

I'm glad you guys like western walnut as much as I like it. Something comforting and inviting about it.

I'll have two tables at the ASIA Symposium next June in PA with stacks of Claro at "retirement" prices. ;)

Hi Steve, I do have more claro timber with portions similar to that one. I won't be cutting ANY wood until late next March and April however as I'm in the process of moving from Oregon to North Georgia. Just closed on a house and property in Acworth near Alatoona Lake last month (paid cash...thanks to many of you 8-) ) I'm moving the household stuff and some shop tools on Dec 16 then coming back to Oregon to get the shop ready to move. Only select parts of the shop (about one semi truck load) since I have officially "retired". I'll get wood prepared for ASIA then and head back to Georgia mid May. Plan on having, among other woods, lots of Claro, figured Queensland Maple, high figured Makore and so on. Maybe a couple dozen or so BRW fingerboards and bridges; lots of acrylized woods for inlay and rosette use and because the East has a lot of great electric builders I'll have some Amboyna burl tops, etc. Until then, my plate is over flowing....
