If you are really interested in making your own cam clamps, you might be interested in my article on constructing your own, in the fall Guitarmaker.

You want them made with steel bars, not aluminum.

Not me... I want aluminum. I use a lot of cam clamps in building and the aluminum ones are a lot lighter to move around.

I have a whole mess of the stew mac clamps, and there are only a couple clunkers in the bunch, but most of them work great and are rock solid dependable.

A couple of years ago one of my Luthier heroes was making clamps and offering them to OLFers. I jumped at the offer and got a bunch and they are great.

Here is an autographed Paul Woolson cam clamp. [:Y:]

The reason I mentioned the steel bars is, I have both types, and the aluminum bars flex some, so you can't get as much clamping strength. Under pressure the clamping arm slides along the aluminum, sometimes they go completely "limp". That does get better with age, though, as the bar gets dented.
The stew-mac version says they are steel, like Klemmsia.
I have some klemmsias 35 years old, and some new ones, the old ones work just as good as the new.
