[quote="Lance Kragenbrink"]I hear ya James, you are correct, it is a bit cumbersome.
What Lars is suggesting is a great idea and something we can put on our list of considerations./quote]

I think it works decently enough, you know? What I wrote sounded like a criticism---sorry, didn't intend it that way :( . I think chats and PM just lend themselves to different uses.

I like the new ideas!

Lars my good forum buddy, If you see me on line and have a question that needs immediate attension and you think I can help you with then by all means PM me and I will try to give you an answer if I can and I'm pretty good at answering my PMs when I get them. I kind of know what you are saying but I don't really think there are a lot of times when it needs to be answered right now in reality. I can tell you that I have put questions out there that I have waited what seems like forever to get an answer too and the answers I got were a bit vague. What I do is PM a member or members who's opinion I trust and link them to the discussion and ask them to chime in if they would.

What toes? Lost them in a hideous accident involving a buffing machine.

Whilst we are on the subject of good ideas... how about a "paid" classifieds section like that at Sawmillcreek? I realize we do not want to compete with our sponsors. I'm talking about "one-offs" (like an old back side set sitting around, or tools, etc. And yes, I know we have the auction occasionally. I know I would gladly donate $20-$40 a year to view the classifieds and be able to post there. I suspect a bunch here would also do the same. A good set of rules would help keep things at bay (regarding what can be posted for sale). The sponsors could use it to post specials! It costs nothing to read the posts, but it does to reply or post new stuff for sale. Sponsor posts could be voluntarily locked I think (unless they really want to get involved with two-way communication, which I doubt in the cases of Stew-Mac, etc.)

Then, I suspect there are things I have not thought about... so let 'em fly back at me.

I'm wary of "back room" stuff on a forum.

a lot of the strength of ANY forum is that the flow of information between two folks can be seen by lurkers who then may choose to join in.

10 minutes ago I posted on another forum about why we though folks were leaving.......

MY personal opinion, is to keep things as public as possible and keep any backroom stuff to an absolute minimum.

Yeah, that is something we are kicking around too. I think the trick is trying to figure out where someone is an "individual" vs. a "commercial" seller. But that idea is very much alive.

Folks are leaving where? Here?

You know though.... I don't really think of this as a "forum" but more as a community of builders. It just so happens that the community meets on the net and in this format. The distinction may seem subtle, but I think anything that we can do to create more points of interaction within the community is beneficial.

I get what you are saying about the public record. That is a valid thoguht, for sure. But I also see enormous value in P2P interactions too.

Martin, I agree to a certain extent with what you are saying, the thing is, we already have a PM system, and have had it for years. This would just be a modification to that.
I like Lars idea of being able to "Ping" some one who happens to be online at the same time as you to get a quick hit answer or just say YO BRO! Whats up!....

I see no harm and mostly good coming from it.

slackkey_mike, I really like your idea of a "paid" classified section. I could see this serving two areas. One would be the ability for (Brock and I) to cull any poachers, (ligit business's that are -NOT- OLF sponsors). And two, give REAL OLF members a great place to "off" a few things now and then.

Brock and I have been trying to resolve how to do a classified section, we will keep trying to work it out. Thanks for the great ideas guys!

Well, like I said, Sawmillcreek seems to be a great model...
