If I remember correctly he used epoxy between these layers and compressed it all with a big hydraulic press. I think there was still some evidence of the glue line though.

A large aluminum plate would certainly resist flexure much more and 50 tons is about where you want to be for this glue up. Remember, you only limitation is the compressive strength of the wood. Have you considered roughing out the shape of each contour to reduce clamping surface area? If all else fails, give me a call and I can start up an official project analyzing the best method to minimize glue line visibility for this application. We have hydraulic presses and RF, so I could probably do it within a week.

Since there aren't any close-ups of the lines it's hard to tell If we are looking at a glue line or just glue that has penetrated into the wood. If it's just glue penetration you should be able to pore fill with epoxy making the lines nearly disappear when you are finishing. Another possibility is fish glue which would have a longer open time. Otherwise I like the Padma's hide glue recommendation.
