Hey Wud,

I just jammed at my first bluegrass festival since college (many years ago) last week end. It was here in St. Louis at the Holiday Inn at Six Flags. I played for about 11 hours straight (well a potty break here and there) with a host of new friends (not present at the potty breaks). I had a blast but my poor little resonator fingers were bleeding by the time it was over. Hey, that is the price you have to pay for our art.

Just thought I would add a few new pictures of the progress on this build. I ran into my first real roadblocks working out the binding issue. I had trouble routing out the back (as most do I have found) and will have to fill some minor gaps in a few places along the wall of the rout. All in all my final solution to purchase the laminate trimmer and modifications to the base was a good idea. I am ready now to bind the top and move on.

I am adding some additional pictures of the box after binding and purfling work.

Lookin' good Ken. Bindings can be a pain. If you plan to keep building (dumb comment . . . it's an incurable illness I think), build a binding jig. A day or two and a few buck expended, and routing perfect binding channels becomes a breeze. I'm on the other side of the state, in Kansas City, but if you are ever in this neck of the woods you are more than welcome to drop by. I'm just an amateur hack building in the basement, but I'm a serious amateur hack. :)

Really nice work. I used to hear piano building insults all the time when I was in the carpenter's union, but here it's a compliment (I think).

Keep at it big man - looking fine.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Nice build! My first binding routing experience just about drove me to drink.....instead, I put the money toward a binding routing jig. Your GSO (guitar shaped object) looks great! Looking forward to seeing more pics. Beth

Beth

Thanks for the complements. After the binding issues I had with this build, I put it away for a bit and began working on my resonator build. However, you always reach that point in a build when binding is the next step.

I finally built a jig like the LMI stationary router. I did a binding today and was thrilled with the results. I am going to have to invest in the rabbet and bearing sets now. I used the only rabbeting set up had on hand for today's work. I will add a pic of the jig. It is nothing new but I am satisfied with it. :D

Ken, would you mind maybe working with an impediment, like unsharpened tools, or wearing a blindfold, or something? You're going to make us all look bad if you keep this up.

Well they say the proof is in the pudding. I don't have any pudding so I will just sent a picture. I am happy with the new binding channel jig. Now I need to build a jig so I can size custom binding strips. :D
