Sorry for the overdue update... I had air conditioning failure in my shop so I had to move my work to other rooms... humidity has built up to a dangerous level and I can't do anything about it until a new AC is installed.

That picture of the top looks like it at one point had a fairly large bridge patch going across the width, which some ladder braced guitars had. Did you put any kind of bridge patch on the inside?

Yes it has a very large bridge patch, probably acts as an extra brace given the length of it. I have reused the original bridge patch since the damage around the pin holes are a non issue, the bridge is going to be a tail piece bridge meaning there will be no holes in the bridge, only a slot for the saddle.

I wish the customer felt that way... he sent me an email telling me that he wasn't happy because I wasn't supposed to refinish that neck.

I got really confused and I didn't check with him if I was supposed to refinish this neck and thought I was supposed to refinish the entire guitar (the neck's original color was a total mismatch with the body anyways, it would have looked odd).

All that work just to get yelled at...

Maybe start making up a standard form for repairs noting the work to be performed and having the customer sign it?

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Regluing the binding. Used CA for this. Next step will be scraping the binding flush (kind of necessary) and routing a dovetail recess, then repair the purflings and filling in any missing wood on the top.

Dovetail cut, I actually made a router jig that had tabs on the jig which allow clamping through the soundhole, allowing a more solid mount.

Looking good Tia. Any pics of your dove tail jig? Also that's an interesting body shape, I'd be interested in knowing the width of the bouts and waist.

The dovetail jig is a piece of plywood with a V bandsawn into it that matches the dovetail on the neck. The size is then adjusted by moving the piece up and down to get the right size. A piece of wood is then glued at the right angle to this piece to allow me to clamp the jig onto the guitar body to cut the dovetail. The dovetail is routed with a dovetail bit, no bearings, and the shaft of the bit runs along the jig acting like a guide or something. It's not as good as a bearing but there isn't enough space to allow for a bearing.
