There's a very old rule of thumb in finishing: Fat over Lean. In other words, if you put a hard coat of something over something soft, it will crack, not stick, or otherwise fail.

Lacquer over latex couldn't be a more perfect example of what NOT to do. Lacquer hard, latex soft! I'm afraid you simply won't get that "hello kitty" shiny guitar look this time. Best bet at this juncture is to use Krylon's clear coat, which presumably has been tested with their paints. You might want to check with them.

Electric guitars have generally used the same finish types as cars from whatever era they were in. Early on, it was nitro lacquer, then acrylic lacquer with nitro clear coats, then two part urethanes, etc. The point I'm getting to is that you may want to visit your friendly auto supply touch up section if you want some colors and clears that will shine up nicely.

thanks. i have sent an email to krylon regarding this issue and asking for their suggestion. i'm curious to what they say.

i think i want a $20,000 paint room. anyone want to donate to this project. laughing6-hehe

I agree with Greg about the lacquer over latex. I recently did a painted cabinetry job that the client wanted a Benjamine Moore paint colour, but needed extra protection over it. My finish source told me that lacquer over latex would never set hard, so I used a tinted lacquer formulated to the B. Moore colour. Look into General Enduro Custom Color Poly and Enduro Clear Poly. They are both water based.

as there will multiple colors in the mural, i suppose "general enduro custom color poly" is not the way to go, so i googled "enduro clear poly and found these two: http://www.woodcraft.com/search2/search.aspx?query=clear%20poly&BrandForDisplay=General%20Finishes&Uses=Finish&proddimclassdesc=Water%20Based&Size=1%20Quart&Sheen=Gloss and wonder ... 1.) what is the difference and 2.) which i should use and 3.) is one quart enough?

thank you

This is the clear that I used http://www.woodessence.com/Enduro-Clear ... 13C61.aspx, but I wouldn't use it over latex, though. I think you will need to find something to seal the mural that is compatable with both the paint and a clear lacquer top coat. Maybe try testing blond shellac over the paint and see what happens. I think you might have some head scratching in your future!

after all of the searching on the net, i am surprised that i didn't find this playlist sooner. it may or may not be the solution, but i will definitely be watching the series to see if it is the solution. watch the first video in the series, which is only 3-minutes long and comprises all of the videos in one short sped-up film. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... i know that multi-colored guitars at the music store didn't have house paint used on them, but just the same, they have hard clear coats, so what lacquer type are they using and/or what paint type are they using for the bright "hello kitty" guitars? there has got to be a solution for clear coating latex house paint ... and whatever it is, i'm missing. sorry if you all have already addressed this and i merely didn't pick up on what was being said.

MOST of the guitars on the wall will have some kind of chemical cured poly finish.

Very different from what we commonly call "laquer".

Even some of the guitars that advertise "nitro" have polyester undercoats, notably Fender, but I'm even suspicious of a few Gibson models.

IMO laquer looks better than any of the polys.

It just takes a little more work to get that smooth gloss look.

Thanks for the link back to Tony's video (and thanks Tony for making it). I'm going to set up a few test boards and have a lacquer/rockhard/tru-oil party.
