The dimples on golf balls cause a turbulent boundary layer which will stay attached to the ball (and reduce drag) at slightly higher speeds than a laminar layer would. At slow speeds, dimples increase friction. At very high speeds, they do too. A golf ball is just the right size, the right shape, traveling through the right medium at the right speed to benefit. Golf balls would fly much farther if they were made in a smooth teardrop shape. It would get tricky to predict how they'd bounce. And putting would be a real challenge.

Traditional samurai swords were very highly polished. Before going into battle, the samurai would take the gloss off the blade with the equivalent of 1200 grit sand paper to reduce the friction of blade through flesh.

I like glossy necks just fine. A little paste wax is sometimes helpful. I do have customers who insist on oiled wood, but they're the exception.

That was my thought too. I don't golf, but if I had to face Mr.McIlroy, I'd want teardrop shaped golf balls. Everything I know about golfing comes from this:http://www.amazon.com/Shape-Flow-Fluid-Dynamics-Science/dp/B0007J6AA8 I'm very shocked by the price. I bought my copy some years ago for about $1.50. If the subject interests you, it's still a bargain. The video lecture series is available on youtube. The presentation is rather wooden. I'd invest in the book.

An old guy like me. Unless of course it's the secret to the fountain of youth. Lol

I like the concept. (Decorative design on the back of the neck). Not necessarily that particular design.
But I'd really have to see how it feels. But if it feels ok, then I say why not?
