It's the wood of many names! I call it red gum, but it's also known as sweet gum, star gum, and a variety of other monikers. Technically, it's Liquidambar Styraciflua.

I have a wood source that cuts all kinds of local trees many not usually available as lumber. They have sweetgum but I never thought/bothered to look through it. That is really nice looking stuff. I think I'll start paying attention to the more esoteric wood options they offer! Make sure you post pictures of the finished product.
