People hate/love controversy. Like watching a car wreck. These guys, all of them, were/are good guys.

Alex my friend they didn't use stitches and instead glued me shut.... go figure.... Hope they didn't use fish, that stuff does not do well in high RH...:) I think it was a type of CA and after all CA was invented to close wounds on battle fields. Just glad that I was out when they used the accelerator..... :D

I think CA was first used for that about 20-25 years after it was invented.

Guys I can honestly say that that that time period was among the most stressful time I have ever had in 10 years of managing the OLF.
I honestly asked myself and my wife if it was all worth it. If what the OLF was and had become was worth fighting for and staying online.
I am glad that things are calm now.
I too miss those guys, especially Filippo, I considered him a friend.

Truth is though, this community and their personalities did not mix well.

Call me one of the naysayers, even though I didn/t always agree with them.I personally feel that throwing these folks under the bus was a bad move. If I want someone to agree with every thing I say I would buy a tape recorder.Human beings as we are , we will constantly disagree about methods , outcomes, needs, $$$ etc on this forum. I moved to the usa because I like the freedom of expression and the ability to do what I needed artistically without being constrained by finances. What I see on this forum, which I think is unhealthy, is a club that rationalizes a particular viewpoint , and IMHO that is totally wrong , as it leaves out those who we do not agree with . PS not sure what happened to you hesh,my friend but get well

We all have disagreements but the problem I do have with some forum is their rather liberal use of the ban hammer. This drives people away.

I realize a bunch of glue debates may get out of hand but then there are merits for each glue and they're all used for different things. For example I wouldn't use hot hide glue to bond fiberglass rocket parts together, and I wouldn't want to use "Rocketpoxy" to bond wood parts either.

Not a clue what happened here but -- generally speaking folks don't get banned from any forum because they disagree with the views of other members, but rather for being grossly disrespectful of other members in their own commentary.

Just my offer of peace and hopefully welcoming back to the fold. Miss you guys and the old banter.

I do miss the knowledge that was lost, the issue at the time was not disagreements over glue or what ever but over the line personal disrespectful comments about other members. I also think that there was real fear by some members of posting replies to issues, as the corrections at times got abusive.

I hear you folks saying that they crossed the line with rude and disrespectful talk. So for me , since I did not grow up in a polite culture but a fractious one where people were not always polite and made nasty, rude , sarcastic , or disrespectful comments of others it is easier for me to accept others shortcomings. Too bad, as those folks contributed a lot of colour , humour, drama, and expertise to the forum which IMHO is sorely missed

Ernie, I understand your position, I am not easily insulted either. I love sarcasm.
In the right place and the right time.

Online its so easy to misunderstand someone intention, good or bad.
For that reason, the "be nice" rule was put in place before I ever put the OLF online.

Nasty, rude , sarcastic , or disrespectful does not equal nice.

Your correct lance , but I think/feel that banning folks who allegedly cross the line is a slippery slope , that creates in my opinion a dry, stale, bland, sterile, albeit polite forum . Just one mans opinion. I guess I/m just not very clear on where these folks crossed that line, swearing? , foul language? , name calling? as I only caught the tail end of that thread. Since I speak 5 languages , and at my age, I am not easily offended. I guess its a cultural thing , and they got busted for breaking some rules?

Ernie, thanks for your opinion. I do respect it.
You are correct, using the ban tool at any online community is indeed a very slippery slope and one that I have avoided at almost all costs.

Just to be clear though. In 10 years owning and managing the OLF I have had to ban only 3 people.
With almost 9000 members and 1/2 million posts, I think that is outstanding and speaks volumes for our community.

I missed whatever it was that ultimately caused the rift and while I still don't know what actually happened, I was not surprised to see that something dramatic had occurred. What did surprise me was Todd's decision to purposely rend a hole in the community. That did not--and still doesn't--square with my perception of the man's character. But I guess he thought it was the right thing to do.

I tip my cap to you, Lance. I highly doubt that I could run this show as successfully.

"Ban Hammer?" On this forum? This has to be the least moderated forum I have ever been on. In fact, it amazes me that it runs as well as it does the way Lance uses his soft touch. There is a lesson here for other forums. A while back, an experiment in moderating took place here that proved the point. Lance knows what he's doing. I hope we always do a good job of self moderating and never go back to what happened a few years ago. :)

Just a spectator of the whole thing, but being smart/skilled/tough etc. is no substitute for kindness.

FWIW, I have no idea what transpired. What I can share is that I used to frequent a different builder's board that was increasingly being run as a private club for a half dozen pro builders.
The board was moderated by someone who took the tone and attitude of a vice principal at a middle school. The "gang" regularly used patronizing sarcasm anytime a beginner asked a question or suggested something contrary to building orthodoxy. If you called them on it or pushed back in any way, the moderator would instantly and publicly threaten excommunication.
I simply stopped frequenting the board. The knowledge being shared was just not worth the frustration.
This board, however and whomever is moderating, is a breath of fresh air. All I can say is keep up the good work!

Egg Zactly. You won't find a more helpful forum for guitar building. Lance is the best. This is a great place to learn and share. It is not a clique. And I so appreciate that.
