Thanks for the heads up Alex, I've been using the 5" Abranet and like them. Haven't seen the Autonet disks but will have to give them a try. The Abranet are pretty pricey.

Edit: I found them on Amazon. In US dollars, about $0.50 to $0.70 each for boxes of 50 or about $0.20 cheaper per disk than Abranet. May be able to find an even better price elsewhere, Amazon isn't always the cheapest.

This is where I get the discs, and my stains and finish. Prices are in Canadian Dollars, so about 30% cheaper in USD. http://www.woodessence.com/AutoNet-5-HL ... 0C119.aspx

I just finished 20 minutes ago. :)

After buffing a finish I hand sanded last week, I realized I hadn't done a good enough job getting rid of the 400 grit scratches and sprayed three more coats of Cardinal. I just finished leveling the Cardinal using 800 grit Granat 2, followed by a pass with 1000 grit Platin 2. I'm following the buffing method Chris Ensor detailed here, which only requires sanding to 800, so the pass with 1000 was really just for vanity.

I've tried leveling with 400 grit Brilliant 2. The 400 grit is still a little too aggressive for me, so I'm going to order a box of the 500 grit Granat 2 for leveling next time I have one ready. I'll follow that with the 800 grit Granat and 1000 Grit Platin to get ready it for buffing. Leveling with the 800 took quite a while, and while the resulting surface is flawless, I don't want to take that much time to level between sessions.

James, I got this sander in yesterday and worked with it a little today. It's well balanced and pretty light really compared to my Dewalt ROS. Question for you, are you doing the sides of the body with the ROS or just back and top? I once tried sanding the sides while still just wood with the Dewalt I have and made a mess of things. Specifically with the binding getting thin in spots.

If you do use this on the sides any tips? Other than just some practice maybe?

Brad

Hey the fein sander finally arrived today. I haven/t tried it on a current spanish heel style 6 string tenor pineapple uke. On the pineappe uke the fein sander could work on the sides, they are continous,so no sharp curves.I use a scraper on the guitar sides and a hard rubber ovoid sanding drum from woodworkers supply . In the video with loofier M. greenfield he uses a thin sheet piece of spring steel backed with sandpaper .If your brave a 6 by 48 sander with the right technique also works , but one slip and you can get a serious gouge .!! As always practice on scrap first
bliss

I don't sand the sides until I've already leveled the bindings, but I do use it to sande the sides with really good results. I haven't had any issues with rounding anything over using the standard backing pad they ship with. I also check the sides for flatness with a ruler afterwards for insurance.

Festool also makes a hard backing pad which will give you even more insurance. I use a pipe in the waist.

This is a pretty good description of the different papers Festool offers. I've been using my same box of Ruben and Brilliant papers since I bought the thing ten years ago, but really like the 800 grit Granat I just picked up and want to get a box of 500 grit Granat when I start the finish process on my next project. I ordered on Amazon.

I'm confused :(

Now that I am thinking about this and going back on my receipts... Why are you calling this a Fien Sander? ISn't it a Festool?

Further, I ordered the sander on a website called festoolproducts.com however it was shipped from a company called toolnut.

I went to toolnuts website today and filled out their contact form and when I submitted it I got an email thanking me for signing up for their news letter. Geeesus H Christ, I didn't ask for that. I swear these people are trying to drive customers away!

I have not received one email, phone call or letter from either company. And I checked, you have to input your email and phone in when you order from them so they must have it. This is the poorest online transaction I think I've ever had. Normally when you buy something you get an email confirmation in seconds.

Did you guys get any kind of confirmations at all? They must have had my order because they sent the paper that I ordered with it.

Anyway looking back it appears I was not charged for the sander but now am stuck with two boxes of useless paper. I'm not sure I want any further transactions with any of these companies ever again so if I don't have restitution in a couple days then I'll be getting rid of the paper as well. Heck I don't even mind hand sanding I just thought this new tool would be fun and now it's the bane of my existence :D

They must have screwed your order up. I got immediate confirmation and repeated emails concerning the delays with projected shipping dates. The shipment notification came from Festool products. As far as Fein in the title, I think we just all figured it out and ignored it :)

Yeah, I assumed we were talking about the Festool sander. Sorry to hear about your troubles McKenna (sorry, don't know your first name 8-) ).

I also received multiple mails about the delays, asks for surveys, and then a confirmation when the order shipped.

But really like the Granat

I really like the Granat also. I bought a box a month ago and it does not seem to clog and/or break down as fast as the Brilliant I have been using forever.

My sander is due to be delivered Thursday. Hopefully it will be. I did receive emails from Tool Nut also on the delays and whenever they pushed out the delivery which happened 2-3 times. The only emails that were consistent were the one trying to sell me more product.

My sander arrived yesterday. I plugged it in and it works, so I guess all's well that ends well.

Got mine yesterday. Still in the box. I'll check it out tonight. I'm finishing one right now so I'll get a chance to see how well it works.

Well silly me, now I feel like a fool. As the kids say, 'My bad.'

Apparently I gave the wrong email address when I bought the thing months ago. And since that time my credit card number had been stolen and some chump purchased $800 dollars of merchandise in a Macy's in Richmond Virginia, so my card was cancelled and renewed with a new number that obviously was not the one on file with Tool Nut and they had no way of contacting me.

Still not happy about waiting 6 months but it's all good.

I got mine out of the box last night and gave it a test run. I think it will be a good addition, runs smooth. I'll try it out on the box I just pore-filled last night.

I did something similar last year, just a different product. Are they still going to ship it to you?

We received our sanders (with paper and $50 certificate), and prior to the expected date provided. We have seen a few reports on woodworking sites that a handful of the Pro 5 LTD sanders have had issues with rough running, but both are remarkably smooth - perhaps a little smoother than the older Festools they supplement.

If not already mentioned, the sander also comes with the new Festool 'Cleantec' twist-lock connector to allow 1-1/4" OD hoses (standard shop vacuum smaller sized hose) to be connected, as well as the older, smaller diameter friction-insert hose ends on Festool vacuum hoses. We use 1-1/4" hoses from Porter-Cable, so this adapter fits them, and the twist lock end can still be used with the older ETS 125 connector. The insert adaptor for use of the 1-1/4" hoses rotates within the body of the fitting, so prevents twisted and tangled hoses, which seems like a good thing. Our ETS 125 did not come with an adaptor, so this represents a nice $30 or so bonus included with the kit. Now if they could just include a nice $200 Festool anti-static hose...

One thing we noticed when cleaning up was that the Cleantec connector did not have as good a seal at the tool as the older Festool friction-fit adapters - we found fine dust trapped on the tool fitting, suggesting that at least some of the dust getting past the locking studs (although it still appears to have been collected, as there was no sign of leaking dust on the outside of the adapter or the sander.
