People frequently ask me how I learned to build guitars. This forum always forms a good part of my answer.

My perception was that other parties were at fault, neither side being civil, and the whole thing devolving into a dog fight. In fairness, perhaps the ban wasn't inclusive enough.
A bit of lively banter among friends is always welcome, but name calling and impugning another's character and abilities never is. An honest divergence of opinion can always be stated in a civil and courteous manner. Having a little thicker skin and not taking offence where none is intended, can also help.
Better to have a forum that is a bit arid than one constantly at war.

I learned a lot form both (and Padma was fun too), but agree completely with Lance's decision - when a disagreement turns so intensely ad hominum it's time to do something.

Thanks Lance

Ed

Your correct lance , but I think/feel that banning folks who allegedly cross the line is a slippery slope , that creates in my opinion a dry, stale, bland, sterile, albeit polite forum . Just one mans opinion. I guess I/m just not very clear on where these folks crossed that line, swearing? , foul language? , name calling? as I only caught the tail end of that thread. Since I speak 5 languages , and at my age, I am not easily offended. I guess its a cultural thing , and they got busted for breaking some rules?

Ernie, thanks for your opinion. I do respect it.
You are correct, using the ban tool at any online community is indeed a very slippery slope and one that I have avoided at almost all costs.

Just to be clear though. In 10 years owning and managing the OLF I have had to ban only 3 people.
With almost 9000 members and 1/2 million posts, I think that is outstanding and speaks volumes for our community.

Agree 100 % lance . There are allot of new and amature builders here who need /want good constructive help. There are very qualified pros here that will disagree on things that's ok . However rudeness in attacking someones approach Is NOT ACCEPTABLE. The only suggestion I would make as an option. If a pro wants to have a sub forum where someone can ask his opinion , then let him pay for that sub forum and he can be King of his castle. If not then let's be less arrogant about having the ONLY RIGHT WAY and if we disagree , do so without being disagreeable. Or just remain silent.

My 2 cents

Giving folks their own sub forum is silly (I know u didn't mean it). If someone can't play nice in the sandbox, then they should go find another sandbox or build their own sandbox. A lot of what was going in could be characterized as brow beating. For that issue, I'm glad it's over. Though I too miss Fillipo. I always thought him to be fair.
