I admit I have not tried this yet but I will since I already have some small toothed plane blades. It might take a careful hand but I think it would be reasonable to get the finish to start coming up without texturing the underlying wood. Much like using a small scraper. Final prep before gluing the bridge for me requires a lightly scraped and smooth surface on both sides. No texture.

The purpose of the toothed edge tool is to crack the finish in a predictable way without affecting the wood surface below. Look at the lutherie.net website halfway down the page for the explanation and demonstration. You crack the finish right up to the line, then using it as a sort of saw, move it back and forth to refine the line

Works a treat with lacquer, not sure about other finishes
