Here are my past, current, and future projects. I'm beginning to think that I take on too much at one time. I have a total of six acoustic bodies lacquered and waiting for necks, four bodies waiting for either tops or binding or both, and between 5 and 7 electric guitar projects.

However, I did finish up a little classical guitar for my four-year-old son. Here it is beside an OM, just to show the size difference.

Not really guitar related, but the last picture explains why I wasn't at work on Tuesday. I caught a couple of small (12-13 lb) Chum salmon, and one 25 lb Spring in the Fraser River just a couple miles from my house.

I'm spraying and sanding nitrocellulose lacquer, on my white oak O.

Chumleys uggg....... now that "Spring Salmon" looks like a Chinook or King up Alaska way nice fish. I have a 60lb Chinook on the wall, best eating salmon there is.

Yup, Springs are a common name for Chinook. And I have to disagree with you, Sockeye salmon is the best eating salmon there is! Spoken from a guy who's freezer is stock full of Chinook, Koho and only 1 Sockeye left :( ....

Thanks Rod, that's claro walnut, enough for another neck. No plans for it just yet. My shop needs a clearing up as that wood has been there for a couple of months now. I'll get to it sometime , maybe. :P

Haven't been working on guitars this weekend, but here are a couple of poor quality pics of the two on my bench, which have been there for a couple of years now. [headinwall] Both are in the finishing stage.

And one of the reasons my projects have not yet been completed...

Various Green River Salmonids.jpg

Took my son out for a day on the Green River. Couldn't have asked for better weather, and the fishing was decent too. My son started college this Fall and I am becoming increasingly aware of the fact that opportunities like this will only become more limited as he gets older. Gotta take advantage while I can. Lutherie can wait. 8-)

It's from about 10 pieces of really nice vertical grained Macassar ebony. It is pretty well hollowed out or 'chambered' as the electric folks call it so the whole guitar should end up weighing about 8 lbs. A huge pain to work, especially carving the neck with hand tools, but boy oh boy is it pretty under finish.

Thanks Lex,
It is indeed a beauty!

Nice work everyone!!

I finished the 5 piece top and I am really pleased with it, super nice stiffness to weight and taptone.

Also recently got a 300$ Adi top ( wow7-eyes ) and a new LN fore plane. The Veritas LA Jack I used to joint was starting to perform less than optimal, sole got a bit worn since I use it to thin rosewood backs and sides as well. With the fore it took me just a few passes to get a perfect joint from the very first try. Less than a minute, no shooting board, pretty nice! I really recommend a good fore plane to anyone spending more than a minute to get that perfect joint.

And finally some progress on #19, furry red Indian rosewood :)

beautiful fish !

I haven't got much building done - but I have improved my shop some and built good jigs, as well as working on some furniture.

Likewise I have spent time with my kids fishing as well - normally a fly fisher I am, but now it is to cutting worms with the kids and heading out to the local lake for some bluegills - they are five years old and are averaging about 5 fish per fishing trip -

I am not rushing my builds for the contest, as I did that last time, and that guitar is headed to the Halloween bonfire...

Gluing the bridge back on the repair . Note in the pic at the end of the bridge a small crack in the finish . It has a Maple cleat under it at that point . Question . Would you wick a little ca in there to seal it or let it go ? Im leaning toward ca but would like advice

finished # 10: An experimental one with alaskan yellow cedar top dyed with hand picked blackberries (why not?), french polished with amber shellac from home depot. The color came out a bit uneven but I like it that way because it's natural. Back and sides are Peruvian walnut from the Zootman, fretboard is Bocote from Rockler. 12 fret cutaway and martin short scale. Came out nice. I am getting better at the basics.

The guitar also has some koa, cherry, silky oak, and mahogany in it. I wish I could afford to add a pick up too. I find this shape to be very comfortable, and I added a slight armrest relief on the top.

I also re finished the top on my second guitar (no pics yet).

John - I went through the same thing with my kids. They were in their early teens before they could get a fly in the right water from the boat. It's all fun though, even the worms. ;) Enjoy it and get out with them as often as you can, 'cause they grow up way too fast.

Wow Charlie, that's still a pretty good stock in the freezer ;) West coast living at its finest!

I'm impressed with all that's going on, both in and out of your shops! Life is good!!

I've been progressing since I started this thread. Got the binding all done on the body, inlays all done and bound the headstock. Ready for fitting of the neck and attaching the fretboard, final shaping of the neck, heal cap, than the final once (twice) over on the body and it's into the spray booth. Then I'll make the bridge, thinking of going pinless on this one...

Rod absolutely fantastic guitar [clap] [clap] [clap]

Just love the blend of colours and your fretboard inlay shows what a talented builder you are :)

Your rosette is superb - top class workmanship :)

Many thanks for sharing :)

All the best

Wow!! What a beauty Rod!! [:Y:] [clap] [:Y:] [clap] [:Y:]
I LOVE that rosette!!! Very cool 8-)

I've been working on my <$150 Challenge Build, an experimental SJ (ESJ2). I've got lots of shots and vids over on my build log, but here's a few shots showing where I am with it right now:

Image

Image

Image

It has a triple spruce top with only 1 brace (which I may remove after I've strung it up and tested things), with a "smooth bevel" and several other novel features. If anyone's interested, please check my thread out on the Challenge build threads elsewhere on this forum. While you're there, check out the other builds too - there are some great instruments being built over there right now!

Cheers,
Dave F.

Gotta love the Rockies! [:Y:]

That is truly one of the most handsome guitars I've ever seen, Rod. Just beautiful. I love the fretboard and headplate inlays, and the matching headstock veneer and binding, offset with the thin burgundy purfling line. Very nice! Would love to see a shot of the back and sides.
