I tried six times yesterday and today to post a reply to a particular topic. Each time I click on the 'reply' button I am promted to log in, and after I log in, when I send the reply, I am promted to log in again. The reply is lost. I did reply to several other topics yesterday with no problem; it's just that one. Curious.

When this has happened to me, I'd clear out my cookies, shutdown and come back in. This seems to clear up the problem.

I have never had a problem with this new forum.

But then as Lillian has mentioned, clearing cookies may be the answer. I clear my cookies after each browser session by default.

Ditto. Clear all the 'private data' and history and the like (under firefox -> Tools, clear private data. Y'all are using Firefox, right?), restart the browser, and all should be fine.

I hear alot about Firefox. Why should people use it? I have Internet Explorer.

I went to Firefox when it allowed you to have tabs instead of opening up separate windows and have never looked back. Firefox was streamlined and faster compared to IE to me. At the time, tabs were helping me keep my sanity. Several of the sites I visit on a daily basis loaded very slowly, especially when I was on dial-up. So I would open up the pages I wanted to check out and let them load while I was reading the first one. Using a tab took up fewer system resources, hence it was faster.

Fran has IE on her laptop and loves it, except the new version will not allow her to log into certain sites. We had to roll it back a version to get it to work. I'm sure its been patched by now, but not worth the headache of finding out.

Outlook and IE are the two main vectors for virii and nasty computer-takover scripts. If you avoid those two programs, your incidents of computer problems will be greatly reduced.

If you dislike Firefox, use Opera (or Safari, or .... )

From what I hear, IE is the least internet-standards-compliant browser out there, which can cause incorrect page rendering, and what donh said. I just started using FF3 and like it a lot.

Alan, if you'd like another browser, name your medicine and I'd be glad to send you a CD. I remember well the pain of downloading over a modem. I'm assuming you have a fairly modern computer with XP?

Its funny, as many problems as IE has, most people still use it. I know I do.
Here is a breakdown of browsers used at the OLF over the last 30 days.
This is typical.

Lance,

Be aware that there are browser installations that will report themselves as IE in order to get to sites that insist you be running IE. I can't remember if I set my present Firefox to do this, but I have in the past. It about 1/2 works, but has allowed me to get to a few business sites w/o having to fire up windows and transfer crap from one computer to another.

So I betcha that pie-chart is just a little bit off! (but only a little bit, darn it!)

Probably, that same percentage of computer users, never change anything at all. They open the box, boot it up, and never look back. Many will never install a new program. They buy it with the stuff they think they'll need, and never upgrade to new software. I know a lot of people like that. Most, even use the default locations for storage of data, which until the last iteration of XP was a death wish if you were trying to back up. Stuff was all over the place.

I switched to Firefox when I started having problems with IE-7 while browsing forums. Some, including OLF, would never allow me to log on with IE7. I never have had much of a problem with Firefox since I switched, with the exception of the start-up of the new OLF. I do have my settings, set to delete all temp folders when I exit, and I have a 3rd party cookie control program that keeps my cookie inventory pretty clean, particularly the ones that load when you reboot your system. One other thing, is that since switching to Firefox, I have not had more than one or two problems with any kind of worms or trojans, that I used to get all the time with IE7, and I keep my protection pretty lean, using AVG Free, Windows Firewall, Spybot, and Adaware free. Using these, thanks to the recommendations from folks at OLF, has given me 30% more system availability over Trend Micro, Symmantic, or other protection programs. It's like a whole new world has opened up.
