I'll be spraying my latest in a week or so when my new gun comes in. I finished my last instrument using the stew-mac branded target USL with a base of the stew-mac sealer. In their finishing book, stew mac recommends building a about 50 to 70% of the film thickness using the sealer and then only applying a few coats of the lacquer on top.
I followed their schedule and the sealer coats didn't go on very well, probably due to a lack of experience spraying, and I pretty much sanded all but a super thin film when level sanding. I then did many more coats of USL over it and got a pretty darn good finish at the end of the day.
So, having gone through that, I don't really see the need for all those sealer coats and have read plenty of on line testimonials of folks using the USL without the sealer coats. My plan now is to spray a couple of coats of shellac on to the z-poxy pore fill and go straight to usl without the seal coats.
Anyone see any reason why I shouldn't do this?
