I decided that since I can now use my Performax 16-32 drum sander for luthier work (I had all sorts of set up problems with it - see this old thread if interested) I would upgrade the dust collection from 2 1/8" to 4" hose. My 16-32 is one of the original ones which had a 2 1/8" fitting - after I bought it, they started making the dust collection port 4" as standard.

In Corel Draw, I designed a replacement hood to accept a standard 4" dust port fitting, then cut it out of 1/8" acrylic sheet using my laser. It glued up easily. I used the original hood's hinges and handle/latch. Here's a couple of photos my finished hood - right click on them to see/download the high resolution versions:

It's fun to be able to see through the hood - not really any advantages to it though. If you, or someone you know, needs a similar replacement hood, let me know. They're easy for me to make and I'd be glad to help out.

Cheers,
Dave F.

Great job. It looks nice and clean.

I bet it's cool to be able o see what's going on in there. You can keep an eye on the paper and know if it's clogging up, etc. Very cool. Now I'm jealous.

Very nicely done Dave my friend and it looks like a very well designed and made hood. I like that it is clear too, dirt can't hide!!!! [headinwall] [headinwall] [headinwall] :D

Great job! [:Y:] [clap] [clap] [clap] [clap] [clap]

Very nice and clean Dave. I have little knowledge of lasers, what are you using? Are they easy to set up? What programs/software are required?

Very nice!

I've been contemplating a mod to mine that would shoot some compressed air on the drum while in use to keep it cleaner - maybe nothing more complicated than a length of copper tube with tiny holes drilled into it. Haven't gotten there yet.
