Whenever doing any kind of gluing procedures I was always taught the wax paper method. i.e. You put the paper between what you're gluing and whatever you don't want the glue to get on. Recently, (I can't remember where) I saw someone just outright use some wax instead. Does anyone here ever do that? I would imagine it would make for a slightly messier workspace. Maybe I'm wrong?

the only time I use just wax , is when I have a complex inlay on a fretboard. I will epoxy in the frets and use wax as a barrier to the fretboard. I don't want to hammer or press in frets on a board with a lot of inlay.
Dave Nichols showed me this trick. I open the fret slots to allow a snug but not a tight fit of the frets. With wax on the board and a matching cawl for the frets I will epoxy about 6 frets at a time. Once the frets are set , ( 5 minute epoxy ) I can clean off the epoxy from the wood and pearl without much work and no problem with the pearl.
Other than that I use the wax paper method,
