I ordered some Rubner classical tuners and discovered that the rollers are a hair longer than the Gotohs that I had used as a prototype when drilling the holes, which was just enough longer that they bottom out in the hole. I had looked at their spec sheet online and it looked like they were the same as the Gotohs. Any tips to share about deepening the holes without damaging the edges. Thanks, Wendy

PS: slots are already routed.

You can cut the end of the roller off a little bit without any trouble. I have done that. The other option, and I had to do this on a set too, is to sand a bevel on the end of the rollers, particularly the one at the lower end, if you use a standard headstock design where the slots taper closer together at the nut end.

Hey thanks, Waddy, I hadn't thought of cutting the rollers. Seems so obvious now!

It's all plastic at the end. There is a metal post inside, but it only goes about 3/4 of the way through.

I thought Gotoh is a bit too long already!

I've trimmed the ends down, too. Selmer headstock styles are smaller than usual...

What are you using to trim them and what is your method of trimming them all to the same length? Are you doing it by hand?

You can cut them by hand or on a band saw, or sand them to length. Files are also useful. It's a soft plastic.

I used to install a lot of these. I found it worthwhile to make a jig for trimming the rollers. I cut roller holes in a chunk of wood so I could trim them on the table saw. Pretty quick to make, and it works fine.

Thanks, they were really easy to cut this morning on the bandsaw. The ones I cut had the teflon rollers. I was thinking of ordering a set of Rubners without the teflon. Has anyone cut them as well? I will be using them on a small head, so I assume I will probably be needing to cut them and was hoping to save some money going the non-teflon route. Wendy

The teflon part is the little bushings inserted on the Worm gear post at each end. This makes the tuners smoother to turn. The rollers are just plastic.
