Hi

I am getting ready for binding so I am scraping the sides flat with a scraper, some of the wood is shiny and some parts are fluffy. I guess if I went at it long enough I would get it flat but its hard work as the scraper wand to snag on the end grain of the top and back and not much of teh sides. is there another way to smooth this roughness

What some of use do .. is remove the top and side from the equation. Do this by routing a small psuedo binding ledge to accomplish this. Anything smaller than the true binding ledge, that takes the thickness of the top and back as you do it, will work. Then you only have sides to flatten.

I am having a nightmare with my scraper blades, I have tried everything in the book to get a burr on them !

I'll go over it with 220 before I bind.

There is no binding on it yet

Yep... Sandpaper is the secret weapon... There is no shame in levelling with sandpaper...

Start with 80 grit and work to 220... Don't skip any grits in between...

I found that a good high quality set of Auto-body shop sanding blocks made a *GIANT* difference in the quality of my levelling....

I settled on "Dura-blocks" -- I just went and bought the standard set... Hasn't done me wrong.
