Got the strings on my first build. I have to say that I am plesantly suprised with the results. It is a parlor size guitar built on the Scott Antes plans. Mahogany B&S, cedar top, maple bindings, ebony fretboard and bridge. I even got some unplanned repair experience with it fell from the hook it was hanging on during finishing (that goes in the lessons learned column). Thanks to all on the luthiers forum, while I haven't been a big poster, I did use the discussion archives 100 times to answer questions and work out solutions.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Congrats and welcome to the class of 2010. Looks great, did you stay up all night playing it? Tell us some more about the lessons learned, what do you plan on doing differently for the next, what decisions went into this one? Most modify the bracing on that plan, did you make some changes or follow the plans? What jig did you make that was most useful and which tools or jigs top your list to make or acquire prior to the next build?

Looks great David! Having done one, I know they are great little guitars. It's amazing how much punch you can get out of such a small guitar. I play in a band with my daughter and a bunch more violins and I can power through them. I'd like to try one in cedar. I bet it sounds great!

And as for "lessons learned", if you had only one major hiccup in the construction of the first guitar, you're well ahead of the curve! (on my first, I managed to route the truss rod channel clear through the back of the neck).

The guitar is completely finished in Tru-oil which was very easy to work. Related to the question of jigs and tools, I spent almost as much time building a thickness sander, binding cutting machine, work table, guitar vice, thickness caliper for the top, etc. as I did actually building the guitar.

I followed the Antes plans to the letter with the exception of using regular tuning machines rather than a slotted peg head and I when with a different top thickness because I used a cedar top rather than the spruce that was recommended on the plans.

I think it has more punch than my full size epiphone. Overall, I don't think I could have been more satisified.

Just rounding up the wood for #2. I am going to use the same plans, but B&S and neck are going to black walnut. I also want to try rosewood for the fretboard and bridge.
