My first guitar repair teacher died. I received this email today:

Bert,

Wanted you to know that I was informed last night that Luthier, Jay
Rhyne, Holley Springs, GA passed away Saturday morning. Funeral will be
Monday, 26 July. Mark Bramlett, can be contacted for any more details
at 770 928 0286 or 770 874 0304. Mark is Joy Rhyne's, Jay's wife nephew.

Richard (Sarge) Burch

Jay Rhiness (Rhyne) was a real character and a good luthier. RIP Jay.

Jay was the first luthier to inspire my bro and me.
His shop was the one that opened our eyes to the possibility of building guitars by hand, back in the early '70's. Not only was he a fine luthier, but he was one whale of a tool designer. Quite an inspiration.
Sad news, but thanks for this update all the same.

Jay inspired me as well. I spent many hours at his shop on Glenwood Rd. I started working there in 1971 while attending Dekalb College. Hung my own shingle in 1974. I remeber your brother John. Not sure I ever met you. John's a fine fellow and I'd bet you are too.

Did you know Mike Maulky (sp?)
One of our early visits, Mike was making a Padauk/Purpleheart dread that was a real eye-opener.
My guitar aesthetic has never been the same since.

Yes I did know Mike Mulky. Someone told me he died a few years ago. I don't know any details just that he's gone.
