Any thoughts on the best tuner for intonating a guitar?

I have a late 60's to early 70's Peterson 400 strobe tuner. It's still more accurate at finding the problems than I am at fixing them. Picked it up about a year ago for $80 at a guitar / archery store in Waco, TX.

Good score on the strobe tuner! We have one in the shop and use it often but I find my next-generation Peterson VS-1 virtual strobe to be as accurate and a heck of a lot more portable. Haven't tried the newest offerings from Peterson but I bet they're great.

The TurboTuner is also great, and is at a good price point. Great flexibility, and extremely fast. If you strum across the strings it'll find every note.

In both of the shops that I work in my IPhone with Peterson's StroboSoft works great for me.

When I first installed StroboSoft on my IPhone David Collins and I calibrated (checked) it against his Peterson bench top unit and they were the same. A day doesn't go by that I don't use my IPhone and Peterson's StroboSoft.

The really nice thing about it as far as my own situation is that a couple of days a week I have to pack up a big tool box, Optivisor... , and power drill and more and travel to another shop. Not having to schlep or pack a tuner helps AND when the tuner is as accurate as is needed it's a bonus.



I also have one of these from Sonic Research and it's in my tool box too. What I like about it is that the rotating, red user interface is easy to see from some distance. As such when I have my frequent jam sessions here at Heshtone Global headquarters all of the players can see it on a bench and tune appropriately or sometimes inappropriately too... What I don't like about it is that the user interface, again the rotating red circle is not all that easy to use when setting intonation.

Peterson's scrolling blocks seems to me to be much easier to get super accurate with than a rotating dial on the Sonic Research but I realize that this is a personal preference thing. They both read exactly the same though so both tuners are very accurate.

Never would have guessed those two things would go together.

+one for a strobe tuner, is not it the "gold standard" on which guitars were inotated on?
