I have been wanting a more precise depth control for my drill press quill for quite a while now and thanks to our Chinese friends and Harbor Freight I have finally been able to outfit a DRO on my drill press quill stop bracket.

I received a mailer last week with some discount coupons for the ubiquitous tool supplier and there on pa. 3 was a 6" digital calipers. Also received a mailer from my friends at AARP.... ( I realize that not all of you are on the receiving end of these select mailings.... laughing6-hehe hehe ) and to my surprise there was a page of discount coupons from Harbor Freight with a 20% discount coupon included in the header. Went in, found the advertised caliper and then found the store mgr. and asked if both the discounted calipers and the 20% could be used together.... [:Y:]

The bottom line; I think the total price was about $10 and it took me a few hours to make the brackets to mount it to the quill. I made it easily removeable and replaceable so that it can be taken off with the two 6-32 allen head machine screws.

I have wished for a very precise depth readout when using my Wagner Safety Planer for initial thicknessing, the 6" sanding drill press sanding disc for precise thicknessing and also when drilling the string holes in my classical bridges. I'm sure that there will be many other uses as time goes on...

BTW , You can also buy the mounting brackets from Industrial machine shop suppliers . I dont remember how much they are , but i dont think they were very expensive at all.
