I just discovered that you can't get shell in Canada from the US anymore. Does anyone know a good Canadian supplier?

I heard of this on LMI's website.

I got a bunch from Depaule supply not that long ago. Is this very recent?

I only noticed when I tried to order some last night. Check out LMI. Apparently in came into effect with the Lacey Act in April. However, Stewmac says they can ship it. Hmm...

DePaul is still shipping to Canada.

Ordered some from Depaule 2 Days ago...Had confirmation E-mail that it was shipped.

I dont know what the Lacey act would have to do (IMO) with shiping stuff to Canada .. AFAIK, it has to do with importing stuff into the US ... if they can get it in, I dont see why they cant get it out ...

Perhaps it's only LMI. I called this morning and they confirmed they wouldn't ship it. Oh well, Shane will set me up. I prefer ordering within Canada anyway when I can.

It is not just LMI. The Duke of Pearl is also not shipping international any more. Both are not happy. It is due to new regulations introduced by the US Fish & Wildlife and US Customs. There is no exemption for small items which makes it ridiculously expensive and time consuming to fill out the paperwork to ship any shell. Is really stupid because I use Paua shell which comes from New Zealand and Paua shell harvesting has been controlled by the NZ government for many years. They even farm it, so it is not endangered. Depaule has his workshop in Vietnam so can get around this stupidity. He is thinking about moving everything to Vietnam because of this. We have had a long email mutual ich about this. What really pissed me off was I ordered and received abalam from LMI just before this all happened and then the message appeared on their web site. No warning! If I had been warned I would have bought a lot more abalam. Abalam is patented by the Duke of Pearl so that makes it difficult to get elsewhere. I suspect I know what Stew Mac does, but can't tell. The US seems to be shooting itself in the foot with this. From now on I will get all my supplies from MOPsupplies, but unfortunately for some things they do have a minimum order. At least in Australia we can legally import Paua direct from NZ with no problems.

actualy the U.S. is aiming much higher than their own foot in all the recent ( the last 20 years or so ) trade policies. they are looking down the barrel of the gun they are aiming... but the political system seems to be incorrigable, and it is impossible to discuss the matter without entering into the areas some call religion , and the realm of politics. on my 2nd I used some white shell i got with a used jewelers saw I bought on ebay.... will I have a problem if I cross the border into canada with my gutar for a vacation ? also , right now many of us are building with woods that may later become CITES controlled , what then ? Jody

Not to Canucks, or to anyone else outside the US. While paperwork is required to export shell (Lacey Act in US) or mahogany (CITES), some suppliers will still ship small quantities of both on a "buyer's risk" basis. Risk is probably low for small amounts. Even so, builders should be looking for other legal suppliers. Meanwhile, I'm not taking orders from US customers unless they're willing to collect in NZ or Canada, and I'm looking at Australia for future shell orders.

Mohagany is now under cites. ? SHEESH . no sense in worrying about the little bit of shell! cripes! Jody

Does this also mean one cannot sell guitars made in USA to folks outside of USA? (since they contain mahogony and shell)
