Hi!

I have finished 1 electric bass, and I'm now working on a classical and an electric guitar, and there's a Uke on the way to the finish, also. I can't decide wich way I will number them. What about you, how do you list your builds?

-Do you assign the serial number when the guitar is finished or when you begin the project?
-For those who build different types of instruments (SS, Class., Elec, etc...): Do you have different sequences of serial, or do you mix it all?
-What formula do you use? #001, #01-11, SS-01, etc, etc..?

Thanks!
Francis

I assign the serial number when starting the project. I just use a simple number. I strung up 29 today. I (basically) only build steel string acoustics. I've built 2 Violins, and I numbered them separately. There's 1 and 2 Violins, and 1 and 2 guitars. I'm going to do a mandolin someday. It will be #1. I personally don't see a need to call it "Mando 1" since you can tell what it is by looking. LOL

I use...

body style-approx completion date (month/year)-# of instruments in that style.

i.e. OM-0611-003

Seemed like a good idea at the time!

Laurie

Don't do serial numbers anymore. When I did them on mandolins, I had a separate entry for the model and the serial incorporated the date (month and yr), S/N, and suffix of top and back (German- G, red maple-R).
Example: 610209-GR

Salut Francis,

When starting. Mostly because when building multiple instruments at once, I can ID the different parts using the serial number so I don't mix up the part.

I mix'em all. They are all guitars to me, regardless of the model.

Plane simple number: #1,#2,#3,... and so on.

I use a combination number. The first number is the total number of instruments to date & the second indicates the number of that type of instrument.
ie. 29-G-23 Twenty-ninth instrument - twenty third, steel 6 string acoustic guitar. "G" = six string, steel string, acoustic guitar.
If the next instrument was a classical guitar it would have been S/N 30-C-3. "B" for Bouzouki, "E" for electric 6 string, A twelve string acoustic would be 30-G12-1. (The first 12 string)
I assign the serial number when I finish the planning stage & start actually building.
Works for me...
