Yo, Padma,
Nice little tutorial on plane making, and it ought to de-mystify the process for some of the lurkers who have never done it. I do agree with Howard about careful grinding. Probably no annealing, hardening or tempering needed if approached with patience. Okay, Dude....finish that beer and get back to archtop building. You've got some fans out here waiting to see what's next!

doin the eyeball thing to the profile...me do dis a lot, constantly eyeballing and feeling the
curves...the thing here is me don't really use no pre cut curved templates although me do has a set for a 17 Benedetto. No me prefer to rely on the feeling in me hands...as in when me caress her do she feel smooth like me beloved. Are the curves visual smooth? if so me happy.
You als get a double wammy in dis pic...on the back wall are two of me paintings, on the left is Vajrapanie and the other is Green Tara.

Well eventually the top and back end up being carved, scraped and sanded and here they are. Notice the shape in that the lower bouts have a slight Fender Jazz quality to them...told ya she weren't gonna be no Benedetto.

Here they are before the finally scrapping.

So now me handing this one up for 2 weeks while me do a quickie Classical in me Traveler Guitar style...for me lady friends birthday. Pics when its finished. Ya.

hopes you likes all the pics.

Cool guitar and always fun to see what the Padma has in store, and despite the cool stuff going on in his shop, he always keeps it light. Me like.

Padma.... back in the 80's it was common to compliment someone with something along these lines... "Your (male appendage) is a monster!". And I offer it with utmost respect. YOU ARE THE MAN!

Also, you do my old heart good by recycling old files into tools. I still have a leftover box of broken ones to make tools from - nothing beats good steel for an edge! I even made custom knife blades from them for awhile. Well done, bro!

So dudes,

me sobered up from me black beer binge and the week long wedding bash. Finished building the doggie's fence to stop him from wandering around the mtn. Bottled 20 liters of me Xmas beer and put up another 20 of pumpkin beer for Thanks Giving.

Did a week of juiced carrots, beets and apples to straighten out and get back into an Ayahuasca vibe, (remember this build is for a curendero) and now with that all done me back into the shop.

bliss

First me coped the F'en holes

Image

Image

Scribed, cut and sanded the braces to fit the top...

Image

Image

Image

Glued on the back and the top parallels

Image

Now me` go clean up the basement shop.

Tomorrow me shave the braces and close the box.

Blessings
duh Padma

What made you decide to go with parallel rather than X braces?

Ok Ok,

Is like dis...

and here me quote master Benedetto

"a thinly carved top with parallel braces will produce a louder voice with greater projection than a thicker top with 'X' bracing, which will typically produce a softer mellower sound."

A thinly carved and parallel braced instrument is stronger and louder .....

So to get the " softer more mellower sound " without the weaker "X" brace ...we gotta go to

the
TONE GENERATOR

Besides... it adds a few extra partial harmonics...how about that!

Stay tuned for

the TONE GENERATOR

coming up next on "Me build a 17" Jazz Arch Top thread."
