So I sanded through a spot on my top today [headinwall] ....I have masked the sides to respray again. Should I respray several coats paying more attention to the area I went through, or should I sanded to whole top down and go from there? I'm useing em2000 varnish if that makes a difference in what I should do.

Thanks

If it were mine I would redo the entire top.

Yep, but first you need to figure out why you sanded through. Either uneven finish application, uneven sanding or bad prep before finishing.

I would probably redo the whole top. But, if there are no color matching issues, and the sand-through was in the upper bout, I'd think about just reshooting the affected area (feathering the finish over a larger area).

What kind of finish? Was there a colored seal coat underneath? (shellac)...

If you finish melts into intself (nitro) and there was no coloring, you can just reshoot. It might show, but not be glaringly obvious to anyone but you, the nature of wood being what it is.

If it was however a finish that dries in distinctive layers, like polyurethane and such, then you'll have to re-sand and start anew. You'll always have witness lines.

If there was any kind of color underneath, I'd say sand back to wood.
